After driving without a speedometer for a year I checked into it & found out the brand new $85 speedometer cables plastic tip had twisted off in the speedometer. My first thought was to remove the instrument panel but after looking at it I don't know. I was hoping that someone could guide me in the right direction on getting it out. If & when I do get it out, I plan on lubricating it according to the great article on top. Thanks in advance for any help

the instrument panel will have to come out. seems like your speedo is locked up. once it is out you can see if it will turn by hand.

I positioned a replacement cable end into the hole & to my way of thinking it did turn hard but was wondering if it could have been partly because the plastic was pushing against the back? The speedometer worked fine until the old one twisted off by the trans because I didn't tighten it properly when I put it together 10-12 years ago. Just trying to figure out the best way of getting it out to work on it.

If the cable end is plastic, then it's the wrong one if the speedometer is a stock type. All TriFives used metal cables.

It was a replacement bought from one of the sponsors. I didn't like it either but put it in & learned the real hard way. Still trying to figure out the easiest way to get the thing out.

The guys that really know will give you a better answer but till they check in try a Q TIP with a little chassis grease on the end and go slow. Mel

To 62chevy427 and ThumperNZ. I read my post and it reads as if the===experts==== are other than you two. That was NOT my intent. Since there had been no ideas given how to get the tip out w/o pulling the cluster I suggested the greased Q tip. I tried to be a little funny about my shade tree approach but I gave an impression that was counter to what I think. Sorry. Mel

Got me thinking down a different track. I have something else in mind but it is very hard to get into that spot. I am thinking that when it twisted off it wasn't clean, so ?? Thanks for the idea
