2004 Chevrolet Aveo. What would cause the PS fluid to move so violently in the reservoir that it would overflow? It is not foaming. It just seems to be swirling at such a rate that it is sneaking past the gasket on the lid. Any ideas?

I didn't notice any noise or difficulty in turning the wheel. I had opened the hood to check the oil and saw oil below the lid level...and onto the core support, but it had been there awhile because dust had dried in it. It was nice and wet on the radiator hose and around where it attaches to the core support. I took the lid off but didn't notice anything out of order, but the reservoir was below low; once I got the combination of oil and dirt off of it so I could read the level indicators. The fluid was very dark and it looked like a washing machine spin cycle inside with power steering fluid climbing the sides of the reservoir. I got some sealer and threw in there and that brought it back up almost the full level. It almost seems as though with the level near the proper height...the fluid does not have the chance to build much momentum and has stopped spitting out. I think maybe some of it had gotten between the lid and the gasket so I see maybe a residual amount now. Keeping an eye on it and may flush the system.
