Starting a 1957 project and want to keep it as original as possible, so don't know if this question belongs here or on the modified forum. Is there a power steering kit that requires the least modification of original parts? Is it worth trying to find an original power steering setup for 1957, or are they impossible to find?

Car is a V8 with Powerglide transmission.

Thanks for the link. If I were to find original parts, what years fit the 1957? Would a power steering setup from 55-56 also work or is 57 different?

For example, would something like this work for a 57 conversion?

That system is from a tri-Five, it will fit your 57. It's missing some things, like the special generator with the splined shaft that turns the pump. Different than the stock non-PS generator. Also needs the gen mounting bracket.

But the real question is, are these components rebuildable, or are they trash? You won't know until you take them apart, assuming you know what to look for.

The steering gear is not different for PS, so that's an item you don't need when adding correct original power steering. Unless of course your existing gear is shot and you need a better one, and again, hopefully you know what to look for inside the gear.

Thanks for the info. I'm just starting to look for the power steering parts, so what to look for is good to know. I would really like to go with something that doesn't require shortening or changing the steering column, which seems to be a requirement for the PS systems that use a different steering box.

I'd leave the car with manual steering but my Dad is getting older and doesn't want to have to muscle the wheel around. Thanks again for the help.
