Body shop took out engine & powerglide when painting car and when reinstalled it will not go into reverse. There is not enough travel in the linkage. We can disconnect the linkage and get it into reverse manually. Everything worked fine before pulling engine. What could have gone wrong? Car is totally stock, 283 powerpack & powerglide.

The swivel joint on the lever at the bottom of the column, is probably out of adjustment. Worn grommets can make the adjustment very critical as you loose motion. See adjustment sequence.
Link to linkage.

New bushings did the trick. Thanks for the suggestion.

Exact same thing happened to me! In my case it was the transmission mounts. Loosening the bolts, jacking under the tailshaft and re-tightening did the trick. Old worn mounts will evidently give you this problem from one day to the next too.
