I haven't had this wiper motor apart since 1972. I remember when it quit. I was driving 300 miles at night to visit my girlfriend (still have same girlfriend) who had a summer job in the Badlands. The clutch rod failed (wore clear through) about 50 miles from home but I figured a clutch rod was not that necessary as long as the starter worked. It was raining fairly heavy and then the wipers quit so I figured that was a bad omen and turned around.

Now the wipers don't work again and I figured I would just get a rebuilt until Paul told me that two speed wipers are $400 exchange. I used a dremel tool to clean out the slots in the mounting screws. I figured I would have to use valve grinding compound and an impact screw driver to get the the screws out but they came out easy. The relay in the top right corner wouldn't work so I used a jumper to bypass it to see if the motor would run. For some reason that made the relay start working. The output shaft was heavily rusted and after cleaning that the wiper works fine. The washer was rusted but I cleaned that and it works too. Now I just need to find the repair parts for the nozzles.

Things are going too easy. I must be doing something wrong. I don't know why Chevrolet engineers made this wiper so complicated.

I think that after 46 years, it is time to make the "girlfriend" the wife!!

Wiper motors are counter intuitive in the fact that they have power to them all the time, and the switch provides a ground. I never liked messing with them, because if I forgot how it came apart, I couldn't get it back together. Back then, every car came with a wiper motor, and the junk yards were full of cars with good wiper motors, so I would toss out the old one, and install a "new" used one. Guess those days are gone.

Not only is it nice to fix the part yourself but you saved some $ to, plus now you know how it works.

I suggest you clean out the old grease and put in some new grease. My wipers quit and I could not get arms to park properly. Turned out the old grease had become sticky and prevented the unit from parking. Once I cleaned out old grease, unit worked perfectly again (and still working 15 years later).

Girlfriend has been wife for 44 years. Kind of hesitant about it though as she sat on the console when we were young and the lid still won't close correctly. Hard to forgive something like that.

Cleaned out the old grease this morning. What kind of grease did you use for a replacement?

Still haven't found a source for replacement parts for the rubber in the windshield washer.

Used white lithium grease.
