I am building what I call a restomod. My car is Dusk Pearl I bought it 25 years ago to restore. It has the original drive-train, but needs literally everything restored. Frankly, it would be better to just buy another restored car. So, I have decided to build what I really wanted, which is a car with a modern drive-train and brakes but the looks of a factory car. By staying close to factory, it is a timeless look. I have chosen yellow. It is an iconic pastel 50s color. but you don't see them everywhere. I love turquoise and red, but there are many of them. Anyhow, I have always thought Chevrolet should have painted the dash yellow like in the turquoise and red cars. But the type A in me that wanted to restore a car would always look at it and say "That's not right." So I am asking your thoughts and opinions on which way to go. I think I lean toward the black stock dash paint scheme.

I have a red car that a long time ago was dusk pearl and white with black and silver interior. i didn't like the 2 tone dash etc.

I now have the red/black cloud with red ultra leather and a solid black dash, cluster, steering column and wheel and black perforated headliner(56 Belair style)and black carpet.

Look in my picturetrail if you want to see it.

HI,
Just an opinion, but for me, I like the yellow dash a lot more than the black. The pic you show of the yellow looks light, bright, and inviting, the black looks busy and dark. My 57 was originally Dusk Pearl, and the PO painted the car Harbor Blue with a black dash. I changed the dash to Harbor Blue, and like it a lot better. Good luck on your selection process!

Being it is going to be modified anyway, I vote yellow too. Clean and it may make some people scratch their heads about what's different

I agree the yellow/yellow/yellow would be the way to go also. I was thinking about yellow myself but that would mean a complete interior change and at that time I was not ready financially to commit to that expense.

I have noticed 2 trends here. First there are a lot of Dusk Pearl / White cars running around in different colors. I have had this car 25 years and the PO had painted it copper. I found the paint peeling and used a razor blade to peel it off. The front end came off of a Turquoise car. So I rattle canned it. There is a moment when I am sad to change it from it's original state, and I have seen some restored. They are nice cars, but the color just does not call to me. Hey if you are going to invest a chunk of change, why live with something you don't like.

The second trend is that everyone seems to agree that Chevrolet should have painted it like the Red or Turquoise dash. Thanks for the input. Anyone else that wants to add their opinion is welcome.

Thanks

I'm torn between the black/silver and yellow dash. I think yellow goes better with the color scheme of the interior, but it is too light of a color for the dash. It's like with the blue or green interior where the owners paint the dash the lighter of the colors - it doesn't look right. The red and turquoise are dark-enough colors that they look OK on the dash.

I have a black dash in my 55. My buddys 56 is Viper red inside and out, when I drive his car on a sunny day the glare off the dash is blinding! Even with sunglasses on it's painful. I can't imagine a white or yellow dash (though it looks awesome) in the summer.

How about matte yellow for the dash? It's just a clear overcoat to go matte.

How about trying a black dash and garnish moldings with a yellow steering wheel and instrument cluster? Really, it's the silver wheel and instrument cluster that don't look right in the stock yellow interior.

I think the white looks out of place. I hadn't thought about glare. Maybe a carpet dash topper just for driving. Pull it off for show.

IMO the silver is worse than the white when paired with a yellow dash.

I prefer the all yellow dash also. The glare will probably come with any color is the angle is right. We cover ours for driving with a black cloth for no windshield reflection. A blue towel will reflect onto the w/s.

The silver dashboard (instrument area) and steering wheel with a black dash (under the windshield) is probably the way some cars left the factory. I like it!
It's all good. mostly
