My 79 rims have been sitting for 10 years

The tires are cracked and will be replaced

Has anyone just put the rim (minus the vale stem) on the rear and just polished them as it rotated??

This would be on jack stands of course.

hope it isn't s dumb question or idea

You could but, you would have to be careful of binding if you let the wheels droop to much. Just pick up a polish wheel at HF and a drill easy enough. I did some and they looked good but it didn't last.

My suggestion is to find a wheel refinisher in your area. The cost is very reasonable and they will polish them and give them a modern urethane clear finish that will last for 20 years.

I would not waste 10 seconds trying to clean up a 70s era wheel manually.
