It’s not like I don’t have enough projects, but every once in a while a car comes along that you just can’t pass up. I found this one on eBay in December of 2016. It had somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 people watching it with a “BUY IT NOW” option waiting for someone to click the button to buy the car and end the auction. That someone ended up being me. Buying a car over eBay, and a car nearly 1,400 miles away at that, was new territory for me. The deal almost soured when I learned that the advertised “clear title” turned into no title at all. But when I saw addition photos of the car…just to verify that I had not been “taken”, the deal was back on. I was told the the car was stored indoors for most of its existence except for the last 5 years. Given its condition I have no reason to dispute that claim. What follows are some of the photos that accompanied the auction.

As I mentioned, I had never purchased such a large item on eBay. This was just around Christmas when people are becoming cash strapped and maxing out their credit cards to buy gifts for friends and family. When I discovered that the car in actuality did not have a title and the pick up address, when google mapped, ended up being a lonely spot along a Nebraska two lane road, I began to suspect I may have been bilked.

The seller to this point had only sold small inexpensive items, and, although they did have 100% feedback they had not done a large volume over the eleven years they had been selling on eBay. I’ve had my share of bad experiences on eBay so, at that point I requested that additional photos be sent with a current newspaper in the photo so at least I could have some assurance that the car indeed did exist. There was also a state recreation area in the vicinity of the pick up point so I asked the car’s location in relation to the recreation area.

Once I got that information, I google mapped the area again, and… there it was. I could see the car on Google Earth and the photos arrived via email about the same time. As I mentioned above, the deal was back on, but a title was still nonexistent.

I posted in the 49-54 Forum asking for advice or of companies I could use to ship this car from Nebraska to Washington and got some good replies. The biggest problem I encountered was the fact that the car was being shipped in the middle of winter and the remote location where the car was to be picked up. As it turned out I ended up using uShip. A gentleman who lives about 40 minutes from the pick-up site took my bid, which you have to build at the uShip site. After a few weather delays, the car arrived at my home in Washington state on 13 Feb 2017 with no damage other than a few expected flat tires. I was told that the hood ornament and three additional wheels were inside the trunk, which incidentally didn't seem to have a lock cylinder, but I was also pleased to find the fender skirts, the radio antenna, and the afore mentioned missing trunk lock cylinder in the trunk as well; to say nothing of a number of fairly large uninhabited mouse nests.

Here’s where the story get kind of interesting. In communicating with the seller I let him know that I had no plans of rodding or customizing this car as it was in quite exceptional condition. He related that the car belonged to his wife’s father and the he was in the process of getting a new engine for it when he passed away. In one of the emails he informed me that he was a pilot during WWII, was shot down, and was held in Japan as a prisoner of war. He also told me his name, Leonard Sokol, so I went to google to see if I could find any information on him.

As it turned out, Leonard wasn’t a pilot as his son in law thought. He was part of the flight crew aboard a B-17 that was based in England. The interesting thing is that he was in actuality a tail gunner…just as my father had been a tail gunner in a number of B-17s during WWII; also stationed in England. Additionally, in the early to mid 60s, my father owned a 1950 Fleetline although it was a four door.

I discovered that Leonard’s B-17 was shot down over Germany, he had become a POW, and was barracked in Stalag 17. The name of the B-17 he flew in was ALSO RAN - STILL RUNNING. A photo of Leonard [kneeling second from right], the nose art of his B-17, and his Squadron Insignia are all pictured below. I figured it only fitting that this car should somehow be associated with his B-17.

Back when I had an some additional floor space added to my shop, I decided, since I would be having a slab poured, to go ahead and put anchor pots in the floor. This goes back to my auto body days and, although it is a system that may be a little past its prime, it is still an effective way of anchoring a car and doing either frame or body pulls. That said, I placed 24 pots in the concrete slab. I had never used them until this ’51 Fleetline arrived. In fact, I had only chipped one out to inspect how they were going to look in the floor. I had to chip out an additional two to get this car into the shop. Because of the snow, the car was dropped at a somewhat awkward angle in relation to the shop door. I uncovered one pot nearest the overhead door, hooked to the rear crossmember, and with the aid of a cargo strap and come-along, began winching the car toward the door. I was fortunate as the snow pack actually allowed the car to slide sideways to a certain degree which lined it up to the door a little better. Once the car was near the opening, I chipped out another pot toward the rear of the shop, re-hooked to the car, and began the winching operation once more. In about an hour, the car was secure inside the shop. Not bad considering I was working completely alone.

One of the first things that concerned me was the fact that this car came without any keys. There was no lock cylinder in the trunk lid and the ignition was in the unlocked/on position. When I was cleaning out the trunk I was fortunate enough to find the trunk lock cylinder. That was a pleasant find. I bought a door handle gasket set and a set of GM blank keys on-line and while waiting for those to arrive dropped the left door handle out to obtain the key code. I took the door handle and the key blanks to the locale lock smith. A half hour and 28 bucks and some change later, I walked out with two sets of keys and one of their in store blanks that the lock smith used for the initial cut according to the code. Fairly quick and easy operation when you have the code. The ignition, glove box, doors and trunk all lock and unlock with no problems at all.

Hi Ram. How about getting a couple of those squadron insignia stickers and putting on the front guards behind the wheels. Just distress them a little and stick them on. Maybe something about 4-5" diameter.
Or you could get an old school sign writer to do something.

I worked as a "Wall Dog" in the sign industry from 1975-1984...and for a very short time about 10 years ago here in Washington state. The sign industry in the 70s-80 was extremely paint driven. Now-a-days, it is mostly vinyl driven. I've seen very talented sign painters hand letter signs, and I've seen computer driven plotters cut vinyl lettering. My thinking was to put a trunk display together including a statement and the three images above.

How are you going to go about getting a title? Bonded title? I have a friend who's a former bodyman/painter. He has a HUGE shop at his remote home, that has a bunch of floor pots for pulling body panels and frames. He's not very healthy now at 76, and has sold virtually all his tools, and is left with a vacant shop. He's actually the guy that got me "drafted" into the Handler's Racing Association, the all volunteer, non-profit group that has operated Bremerton Raceway since 1959. My own garage/shop in my back yard has a slight incline to get to the higher level back yard; I have a chain cemented in the gravel driveway 4 feet deep that I've used to pull cars up with using a come-a-long; not a fun experience at all! It's a LOT of work to do that all alone, and even with my nephew helping out one time, still a job. BUT, I recently bought a 110 volt Warn winch, and can't wait to try it out!!! It has a much longer cable to work with, and NO more wearing yourself out. I like your Fleetline, and it's a great color. I miss my 51 Bus Coupe.

I believe it would be a bonded title. I think that it is called "Ownership in doubt". RCW 46.12.680. The car gets registered, but I don't get the title until a 3 year waiting period has elapsed.

Back to the car. This Fleetline was sold and shipped without hood springs and the seller put incorrect bolts in the hinges just to get it across country. I purchased a set of correct shouldered bolts but was a little concerned about where I would obtain replacement springs as there were some complaints in the main forum. I noticed that the Filling Station was selling a set of springs for 1949-52 and another set for 1953-54 at different prices. I thought maybe the complaints were because they had gotten the wrong hood spring for their application. In any event, something wasn't adding up so I decided to do some research. After finding the correct section [the Ready Reference has them listed as Group Number 8.018 when in actuality they are Group Number 8.013] I discovered the following:



Armed with this information I hit eBay looking for Chevrolet hood springs with the required 23 coils. Most of the ones I found had 28 coils; new AND used ones seemed to have 28. I finally found a used set that did have 23 coils and bought them. I used a set of spring stretchers that I made way back in the 1990. These work well when you are initially installing hood springs, but once in, the RE-BAR spring extractor/installer can't be beat; I have a set of those as well. The only thing you need to be aware of is where you position the hose clamp so that you can easily loosen it once the spring is in place.





The hood now opens and closes properly and seems to stay open in a high position without much difficulty; even higher than the hood on my other '51.

These were the type that were around in the 90s. I remember being stymied by the tool that is shown in the shop manual. I can't honestly remember where I got the idea or who was selling these but I decided to fashion a set for myself since I had access to a MIG welder. They are 1-3/4" tailpipe...the same that you can get from about any muffler shop. I remember buying a 24" section, cutting it to about 2 eight inch sections, welding the washers on the ends, then with a fresh hack saw blade, cutting them apart lengthwise. Wall thickness is 16 gauge, which I think is fairly normal for a tailpipe.

Here are a few other things I discovered. Both the hood springs on my '50 and '51 are the 28 coil springs. In my opinion the 23 coil springs seem to work much better and the hood seems to stay open much higher. All these springs seem to have about a 2" circumference. If you are having trouble with your hood not staying open high enough, If you can, find a set of 23 coil springs. They seemed to have worked out great for me.

That should read "diameter". So perhaps a 2" diameter pipe would work better.

There's a fairly simple tool on E-Bay for the 49-54 hood springs made with angle iron and heavy duty washers. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

I've seen that type...I guess eBay is where I saw it. Chevsofthe40s and the FillingStation sell kind of a box shaped set as well. While I was in the Filling Station catalog and at the hood spring section, I did a visual comparison of the hood springs that are pictured. I had to use a magnifying glass to do this but the FS 760 (1953-54) hood springs count out to 23 coils. While the FS 759 (1949-52) have a coil count of 28. Just an FYI.

When I dropped the left door handle to have the car rekeyed, I noticed that the rear portion of the left door had been repainted. The paint was a very good match, but it was obvious that the handle and the belt moulding had not been removed prior to repainting and there are also some fairly heavy sand scratches in the finish. I believe the discoloration and paint loss on the left door is a result most likely of the reaction between the lead filler or flux that was used on the repair. Given the fact that the paint match is so good and that the reaction to the filler, I would guess that this repair was done early on as opposed to in the 60s as more than likely plastic filler would have been used then. I'm not sure the paint match would have been as good either. The last photo shows the paint area buffed around the cleaned and reinstalled door handle. As stated earlier I also installed new gaskets between the handle and door.

When I began working on the left door of this car, I discovered that the door check link needed repair. I realized that this, if left the way it was, would eventually lead to damage to the fender and door. A photo of that type of typical resulting damage is shown below in the photo of another ’51 Fleetline. The check link strap seemed to be okay from what I could see, but it was obvious that at minimum the roller portion of the system had failed.

I ran into some difficulty removing the door handle and the window crank in an effort to remove the door trim panel and posted my experience in the main forum. I discovered that Chevrolet used two different types of handles in relation to the horseshoe clip that holds the handle to the window and door release mechanism. I discovered that a KD 430 Tool easily removes the clip on both types of handles. For me, the answer was easy. If you can’t see what type of handle you are dealing with, and one tool removes the clip from both types of handles, the tool that works on both is the tool to use and the tool to keep in my toolbox.

With the trim panel and load hole covers removed, I discovered that the existing roller, had fallen inside the door. It had failed at both places where the threaded nut section was pressed into the roller assembly. I obtained a couple of NOS roller assemblies on Bay, and although they were somewhat rusty, I knew that a quick bath in THE WORKS™ toilet bowl cleaner would resurrect them to like new, rust free condition. Once one of the roller assemblies was packed with some bearing grease, I installed it in the door.

I also dropped the strap to make sure it was still useable. The kick panel cardboard had to be removed to gain access to the single bolt that holds this strap. I noticed that the strap was tighten at somewhat of an angle but it removed easily once the bolt was backed out. When cleaning it, I noticed someone had written 65¢ on it with a magic marker. This told me that someone was probably trying to fix this check link at one point, but my assumption is that they only replaced the strap without investigating further or, after realizing the work involved in replacing the roller, decided the strap was a "good enough" repair. I'm not sure how long it lasted, but without a thorough repair, before long, the door was right back at square one; in eminent danger of receiving some serious damage.


STRAP WAS OBVIOUSLY REPLACED IN AN ATTEMPT TO CORRECT PROBLEM

When installing a strap, I like to tighten it slowly as I move the door several times to the open and closed position allowing the strap to align itself on the stationary roller assembly inside the door. Once the two were “playing well together”, I fully tighten the bolt that secures the strap. JOB DONE! The door now stays in the hold-open position not only allowing more work to be done of the door itself…but also effectively eliminating the possibility of damage to an otherwise very straight and presentable door.

Work on the left door continues. I have relieved the door of all of the stainless trim and have been getting all of the dirt and debris that has accumulated behind and in it cleaned out, polishing the stainless, and remounting it to the door one piece at a time. The upper reveal moulding removes easily with a putty knife slid in from below. Just slight pressure is all that is required to remove this moulding and it was my experience that the clips remained in the moulding and not in the door. I researched how this moulding is to be remounted but the Fisher Body Manual was somewhat cryptic in its explanation stating that clips should be placed in their corresponding opening first but noted that it may be best to place the clips in the moulding first and then, align the mounted clips to the body mount holes. I discovered that with the upper reveal moulding on the DeLuxe models, it’s best to put the clips in first, once you remove them from the moulding. Note that I discovered that one clip was omitted on each side. I assume that difficulties were encountered when trying to install this moulding with this clip in place as both sides had the same clip at the curve missing. Once I had the clips reinstalled, I taped the belt line moulding in place to make sure that the upper reveal moulding met up with it properly at the belt line and aligned the bottom of the reveal moulding to the bottom of the clips. I then pushed the moulding from below, kind of in an upward rolling motion, and made sure that it popped over the upper potion of the clips.

I honestly didn't count the clips when I removed this piece for buffing. I discovered I was one clip short when I when to reinstall it...I really didn't think that I lost one anywhere...so the confusion started at that point. I decided that it wouldn't be so bad if one was missing from the relatively straight run above the window, so I used one of those to replace the missing on at the curve. I'll tell you what, I struggled and struggled to get the moulding back on and the problem seemed to be right at the curve. I then checked the right door and discovered that a clip was missing at the curve on that side as well. I'm fairly sure that the moulding has never been off of this car since new...so it is my assumption that they were never installed at the factory. There is no evidence that a clip was resting against the paint at that particular spot as there is that evidence at the other locations. Again, rain deflector or not - mine was removed during install and it's only resting back in there for the photo - I found it extremely difficult [I never could and only got frustrated] to install this moulding with the clip in the door at the curve.

I suppose now that I am retired, I should hop back on the Fleetline. Well, along with the problems with my Olds and other projects all over the place, I would have. I need a vehicle to haul “stuff” and the Olds with the rear seat removed ain’t cuttin’ it very well. So, I got back to the ’53 6500. Improvements include…correct carburetor, working choke and throttle cables, new starter drive, new battery, working air flow heater, recovered seat, and a completely bled Hydrovac brake system [we'll see how long that lasts]. It has assisted in pulling felled trees out of the ravine behind my house, pulled some small stumps, and sometimes serves as “lawn art” especially during the holidays.

Well, I did pull the rear carpet completely out, blew it out with compressed air and started to shampoo one area. I don't know that the shampoo made much difference really. 4 carpet tacks which were driven directly through the floor pan held it in. I think you can see one under each seat side and one on either side of the torque tube hump. I also found the water Test Ticket between the carpet and the jute. It was on the left side of the hump kind of under the front seat.

A few months back I decided to unroll a small dent on the front valance. The tape was used so I would not be pounding directly onto the paint. I was too lazy to drop the bumper bracket so I roughed the metal with my heal dolly and body hammer. I also turned down the lip with a pliers.

I finally dropped the valance and continued the work on the ground using another angled dolly and a larger planishing hammer that I had bought on eBay from a body guy who used to have a shop in South Dakota. Some of these tools looked like they were from the 30's and had been through a lot. I then remounted the panel and used my vise grip slide hammer pulling directly out on the flange or lip. This further unrolled he crushed radius' of the valance. Still needs a little finessing.

I've changed my attention back to the interior. While the original fabric is still there, it is on the outer edges of it's usefullness....especially the right front seat cushion. The foam cushion inside is extrememly hard and brittle. It is turning to powder inside the cushion every time weight is put on it. I'm not 100% sure how I'm going to fortify the fabric short of buying new upholstery, but the foam has to be replaced for sure. SMS has the correct fabric, although I think some of their colors might be a little dark...espacially if those shown represent the fabric used on the door panels. I did discover two more mouse nests in each of the front seat backs. It would seem that they slowly relieved the rear seat back of its padding and toted it to the trunk and front seat backs for their homes.

I replaced the rear seat from now and removed the front seat. This allowed me to clean the front floor somewhat and begin to fit an NORS front rubber mat. I also began polishing the steering wheel and dash. The steering wheel has never been removed that I can see [still has the factory "staking" which does not look disturbed]. The horn ring seem to adjusted very well. The radio still retains the small felt washers between the knobs.

Although the doors on this car still seem very tight, I did notice that the window tracks are getting a little old. In fact, when I rolled the left front window down, it got hung on the felt and ripped it loose on the rear track. Upon disassembly, I noticed that other than the felt itself, the tracks including factory clips were still very much in useable condition.

I had made some replacement felts on my Business Coupe using synthetic felt which seemed to work okay, but the windows were not as tight in the channel as I knew they could have been. I decided to replicate the same process, but this time I decided that the felt needed to be a little thicker. I remembered making the ones for the coupe double thickness…so the ones for the Fleetline, I thought, would be better at a triple thickness. I first determined the required width felt needed by placing a piece of cardboard into the channel. The felt needed to be twice as wide as the determined width as it had to go to the bottom of the channel and double back. I then cut a piece the same width as the cardboard template. I sewed this together with strong synthetic upholstery thread as shown using two zig-zag patterns for each loose side. I then ran a straight stitch down each side to keep the felt relatively flat. I cleaned out the channels very well, laid a bead of silicone in the bottom of the channel, folded the felt in half and pushed it evenly into the channel.

I then used the glass itself to press and retain the felt in the channel. this forced a certain amount of silicone past the metal ribs of the channel which I smoothed over to more of less lock everything in place. I then let the silicone cure with the window in the channel. Note that the original channel clips are retained this way. Any silicone that had gotten onthe stainless bead peeled off very easily.

Here is the preserved channel reinstalled in the door. The glass is very snug and does not rattle at all...especailly when the door is closed. With the original clips still intack, there was no problem trying to devise a way to get the channel to stay attached to the door frame.

Back to getting the minor damage repaired on the front. The left front bumper bracket was broken but luckily the broken part was still held in place by one of the bumper bolts. This came in handy as the replacement bracket I bought at a local swap meet really stuck out a lot further than the broken original. The only feaseable solution was to repair the broken bracket.

Here are a few photos of the continued front end sheet metal straightening. Most of this is not seen, but I still wanted to iron out some of the wrinkles. If I were doing a complete restore and repaint, I would go futher with this repair, but my goal here is to only straighten the sheet metal out a bit.
