I started the intake gasket replacement today. I'll do a write up at the end. I moved more stuff than necessary however the intake was easier to remove. The intake was very loose. The gasket was broken in several places. The driverside gasket was bad. Water was up and down the entire line. Look at the pictures for details.

The entire system will be flushed for conversion to green antifreeze. The Dex-cool radiator looked like it had mud in it.

The fun begins tomorrow! Clean up and install.

The above article goes about removing several parts. I didn't remove all the parts listed. Especially the A/C compressor. I just moved it forward and bolted down with the rear bolts temporarily.

When you replace the manifold, get a couple of studs for the heads to locate the manifold so that the sealant on the ends don't get mushed around.

I just saw this thread after the other one about removing the thing one the throttle plate.
I see a heater core. Smart idea to replace it but you'd better learn a few new swear words when you find out that the dash has to come out to access it.

I found evidence the core had been previously replaced. Screws were missing from some lower panels. I left the core alone. I hooked up the hoses and flushed with water. I wanted to get out all Dex stuff before converting to green coolant. The flush did get rid of the dreaded gargaling noise common with these cores. The new radiator works great. The engine is running a lot cooler. I'll post the final install pictures later this week. I even modified the thermostat too.

The transmission likes the external cooler. It shifts differently. No leaks so far oil, tranny oil or water!!

I am in the middle of the intake gasket swap on my 2001 Jimmy right now. I have found a couple of references to a final torque of 11 ft-lbs and to use some loctite on the bolts. The only thing I haven't found is the correct torque pattern for the 8 bolts. Anyone know this?

My service manual has the pattern. I can post the sequence tomorrow. I let mine sit for at least 12 hours for the intake silicon seals to cure. No problems after driving around 3 days.

My turn...my turn.... I just noticed the front seal of the intake leaking antifreeze. Yes i still have the dex crap in it I'm just debating to do it myself in 20 degree weather (no garage) or pay to have it done Do you have to replace the lower or just the upper gaskets? I checked the prices and they better not leak at those prices. I need an older car or truck to play with. But that's another story. If I do it myself, any tips?

Gchemist, how hard was "Burping" your system ? I found when changing my water pump, it took getting pretty hot to get it flowing ... runs a little warm at first am run but, fine once the t'stat opens ... Q ... is this a sign of time to replace ? I did pump, lower hose, belt and idler pulley. Did the wrong one, ... still have the squeak , have to do AC idler now. Mine already had the green put in it ... got lucky there (maybe '95 had green, I dunno).

Thermostats are not made the same. What brand did you use? After my conversion, I have a problem in actually heating the engine up. Every now and then, I get a coolant not hot enough code. I contribute the code to the two holes I drilled into the thermostat. The holes were drilled to help air get out and for water flow before the thermostat opens. I simply reset the code. No problem since the conversion to the yellow/green stuff.

Park your truck on ramps. Rev it up a little. The angle will help get the air out of the heater core. My gargled until all the air was removed.

The easiest way is to get a Prestone Flush & Fill kit...<$6. I've never had any issues since using this.

Start from the center and go across back and forth.
First pass tighten to 26 inch lbs. (3 Nm)
Second pass tighten to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
Final pass tighten to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)

Oh, I guess I forgot to write it up. What do you need to ask or know? Several board members have changed out leaking lower intake gaskets. Checkout the other sticky for more information.

You can remove the upper intake seperately or as one piece with the lower intake.

It's a little over kill by remove the fan shroud and pulleys. The A/C compressor can be moved forward and bolted with the rear bolts. The bolt underneath the compressor can be removed with a crow foot wrench. The fuel lines are easier to unscrew using crowfoot wrenches too.

My 99 blazer 4.3 intake is also leaking what. Is advantage of converting to green over orange what is also needed to do to convert back to green

The advantage is that green will not sludge up the system. Get some Prestone Cleaner...not Flush. Run it for 3-6 hours. It can be over several days. Install a Prestone Flush & Fill kit and follow the instructions.

First, let me say this is awesome. Nancy just bought an 02 Blazer 4.3L. had not heat put antifreeze in and solved problem. Just got tires and they quoted $1,272. to replace lower intake gaskets. We will have to do ourselves, My question is will this tutorial cover the 02 v6 or what changes do I have to make. They should be the same motor?????

The '02 4.3 is the same. A few external differences but not enough to worry about. Just follow what we did here. If you do the lower intake gaskets, flush the Dexcool out and go with fresh yellow coolant. I like green coolant but it's getting harder to find. You shouldn't worry about the FI spider either. An '02 already has the factory update.

Use crowfoot wrenches for the fuel lines and intake bolt under the air compressor. If you have any problems post them on the board. I did mine over two days taking my time. I taped everthing to ID what I unplugged or moved. After removing the lower and upper intakes for gaskets and FI spider, I can do a whole setup probably in one day.

My only question is - what is a crowsfoot wrench? Is i the wrench for tubular lines?

Haha, here ya go. Go down to Harbor Freight and buy a cheap set of wrenches. You need metric sizes. I bought both SAE and metric to keep handy.

Take a look the fuel lines. Right past the shrader valve is where the lines go back down to the fuel tank. You'll need crowfoot wrenches to unbolt the assembly from the main lines to the FI spider.
