What is it with the 1995-98 Chevy fuel pumps? Both my '98 and the '96 that I used to have were noisy as hell. I can roll all the windows up and drive down the road and STILL hear the pump whining plain as day. Every truck I've seen from these years does it. I've had my '98 for about a month now and I'm SICK of listening to it.
My father-in-law has a 2002 Suburban, a 2002 Silverado and a 2004 Silverado. None of his vehicles have noisy fuel pumps. Is there a different or later-model pump I can put in it that will not make this gawd-awful noise?

my 95 doesn't make any noise. That year is a TBI pump and they were quieter though. 96 up have vortecs.

The factory fuel pumps are normally quiet. A stopped up fuel filter will make the pumps somewhat louder. Most of the loud pumps I've seen are most normally aftermarket pumps. I have one in my 88 right now that is as loud as yours, windows up and driving down the street and still hear it. It is a non AC pump some one else put in. My 97 Burb has a new AC pump in it and it's perfectly quiet.

Maybe you have a cheap aftermarket pump... I always used the AC Delco with great results, not noisy at all.

My AC Delco pump raises hell and it only has 10,000 miles on it. What is worse, the dealer will not warranty it for the noise.

I know I am not crazy. EVERY '96-'98 truck I have ever seen does it. My '98 does it, my old '96 did it, my uncle's '97 does it, my friend's '96 does it, my other friend's '98 does it, etc etc etc.
It's not unbearably loud, but it's definately noticeable. It was worse on my '96 because it had a rear slider window.
I just wonder what they did differently on the newer trucks?

My '96 was VERY loud.. can't hear my '92 or '94 at all while running.
I have a parts-house brand pump in the '92 that I installed (long before I got on CT and read horror stories of using non-GM pumps) and the only time you hear it is if you turn the key on and wait before starting.
Dunno if the pump in the '96 was original or not since I bought the truck with plenty of miles on it, but man it was loud. Ran great though..

It's really only a problem when it no longer makes any noise at all...

Both my 96 and my 99 have the Vortecs, the 99 was bought with 44,000 on it and it's up to 95,000. The 96 was bought with 60,000 on it and it's up to 115,000. The 99 has had a noisy pump since I bought it, the 96 is much more quiet. Given the mileage on each when we bought the trucks, I suspect but can't be certain that they're original. But look at the mileage each has given me. Noise does not seem to relate to a "good" or "bad" pump and I have no idea why some are noisier than others. It may bother you, but it may also give you years of good service, or depending on current mileage it may have already given years of good service. If it's working good, I'd live with it. They're not all that cheap or easy to replace.

The noise also is attributed to the kind of tank the pump is installed in. Some trucks have a plastic/rubber shield that helps reduce the noise too. It's in the bare metal tanks that makes the loudest sound.

The pumps on the older TBI trucks aren't loud at all. You can't even hear them. It's the later Vortec pumps that are loud. I guess it must have somthing to do with the greater pressures needed for the different type or fuel injection?
I have no doubt that my current fuel pump will give years of service... I just wish I could replace it with one that wasn't so damn LOUD!!
I know how hard they are to replace, as I've done quite a few ow them in the past. And I don't consider it to be THAT big of a job (as long as the fuel tank is almost empty when you drop it).

Yep, an empty tank and air tools as well as a transmission jack makes the job easy. I have got it down to around 1.5 hours from start to finish with a 10 minute beverage break

Hello All,
Replaced the fuel pump on my '99 Burb last March with 125,xxx (original fule pump). The old pump was noisy... bought the new one at Auto Zone and replaced it (Fuel filter as well), the new one was very quiet until about 1 month ago. It now has 145,000 on the clock.. replaced the fuel fliter about 2 months ago with an AC Delco filter. Well, after reading BOOG's comment about a clogged filter could make the pump noiseier I replaced it today and it is back to quiet as can be. You guys are great. Thanks much.

My 1998 C2500 Suburban pump was loud as I rolled it off the dealer lot in 1998. It got very quiet at 143,000 miles, just about the exact same time the engine died. I still say the General was on narcotics when he designed that entire fuel system....

Earlier this spring my pump died so bought a Car Quest brand and after installation it sounds like popcorn popping inside the tank. Actually I think it's cavitating...does it with a full tank too. Anyone else experience this. It is rather annoying - and sounds like something is rattling apart in there. I've run it for about 9,000 miles now. I'm tempted to replace it just to see if I got a bum pump. What are your thoughts??
