Okay folks, I have been trying to track down what engines were available in what years, new from the factory back in the day.

Most of this info. applies to c10, c20 models - though in my chevy truck id numbers book other engiens are mentioned which I 'think' are for bigger trucks, like the 348. The gmc's had the big honkin' v6's or the optional inline sixes of chevy... as far as I know.

Bigger truck engine info. welcomed...

this is what I have so far:

----------------------

1960

Engines:

235

261 inline six ?? <- was this available from the factory then? Or only in the bigger trucks? I'm confused on this point as I saw a reference that the 261 was available for the 1st time in the c10, c20's in 1962

283 v-8 optional

----------------------

1961

235 standard

283 v-8 optional

----------------------

1962

235 - still standard?

261 - optional, 1st time in c10, c20(based on what I've read)

283 v-8 optional

----------------------

1963

light-duty model's torsion bar front suspension now with with coil springs

two new six cylinder engines:

standard 230 cubic inch six and the optional 292 cubic inch six.

The former 235.5 and 261 cubic inch sixes remained the standard engines for K10 and K20 pickups only.

----------------------

1964

The 230 and 292 six cylinder engines continued as the standard engines for all 2 wheel drives and beginning in 1964 for all 4 wheel drive pickups also. The 235.5 and 261 sixes were dropped.

The 283 cubic inch V-8 remained optional for all C/K pickups.

----------------------

1965

standard/option Engines the same as '65

----------------------

1966

standard engine was the 230 six. <- I read a thing that stated it was a 250 this year - was that a type-o? Was there a 250 six? in '66?

The 292 six was an option

The 283 and 327(first year for 327 in trucks) V-8s were options.

----------------------

So anyway, what do you guys have to add?

-W

Good info. Not sure if this site is accurate or not but check out the vin decoder link which also lets you run queries of engine sizes available as well as other specs re color, tranys, models, axles, etc.

This isn't going to help you much, but what the heck. The big series are all thrown in with the little guys.

1960;
235,
235 thriftmaster special,
261Jobmaster,
348workmaster,
348 workmaster special

1961
as above
plus the 283 Trademaster optional C10-50 including 4wd's
a 283 with a 4 bbl was called the taskmaster, for C60's

1962
Taskmaster discontinued (283 w/4 bbl)
Workmaster discontinued (348)
Now they were all "high torque" no more "master" names
261 became an option in C10-50
327 repl 283 above
409 repl 348 above

1963
153 4 banger
230 and 292 introduced replacing 235 and 261 except for 4x4's

1964
as above .

1965
153 4 banger
194 L-6
230 L-6 (3 versions)
292 L-6
283 V-8
327 V-8 2 versions 1 for El Camino w/ 4bbl. and 2bbl 185 HP for 3/4 and 1 tons
348 V-8
409 V-8

1966
366(MK IV, forerunner to 396 402 and 427 BB's) repl 348 and 409's

Hope that helps!

That first year the 327 v8 was offered in trucks was 1966.

They had the 283 v-8 in trucks prior to that.

My '60 resto pack shows the 283 trademaster available, and 283 taskmaster available in the big boys.

What are the differences in the 283's ? different cams or something? just a different name?

I have a Motor's Truck Repair Manual for 1955-1964. The only difference in specs that they show is the 60 trademaster has 8.5:1 compression while the 60 taskmaster has 8.0:1 so I assume the trademaster must have slightly smaller chambers in the heads. Anyone else?

Taskmaster probably had a little differant camshaft profile as well for heavier loads!

Robocorp and Rich -

ah.

We're gettin' to the bottom of it post by post.

So the 'heavier' trucks... with the 'other 283' in '60 - is that 1 ton and up or beyond 1 ton...

Woog,
I'm going to take shot in the dark on this, could 1 283 have a 2 barrel carb, and the other have a 4 barrel carb?
