What do you think, is it possible ?. Have anyone made/saw this kind of work ?. I won't transform my 4 door (w/post) into a mutant. I know that it would be more easier convert a sport 4 door into a convertible but here in my country is imposible to find any Belair model, think you looking for a Jaguar 57 in the USA. Thanks for any advice or opinion.

No matter what it looks like, you would still have a converted 4 door and you would have to sell it as such. I believe CARS inc. sells the conversion... it'd be a waist of a 4 door car though

I sure would not feel good about selling that car to someoen no matter how good it turned out. It reminds me of the guys who turn plain Jane Chevy's into Super Sport clones. It just cheapens the hobby.

I don't think it cheapens the hobby at all. It's your car, do with it what you will.

I am sorry, I just was not clear enough, sure I agree, do what you want to your own car. However should one convert the 4 door into a convertable or do the same with a Super Sport and then attempts to pawn it off as the real deal taking advantage of some unsuspecting person who does not know any better certainly cheapens the hobby.

I have seen this done before, not sure if the guy started with a 4 door or a 2 door. But I do remember when this car first showed up at a show, it was eary 80's. And I think for about 4yrs this poor guy just kept finding little things that just didnt jive with the stock rag tops. It got to be kinda funny as time went on. I would not even consider doing something like that.

A couple of things to remember as you think about attempting this:

1. You will need to put a tremendous number of hours into the sheet metal work. Having the sheet metal to do it is only a small start.

2. You will still need quite a few convertible only parts, or will need to make something to substitute. The first things that come to mind are the framework for the top, the stainless pieces around the windshield, the clamps at the top of the windshield, etc. These won't be cheap or easy to get.

C.A.R.S. Inc had an ad where they stated they had everything to do this conversion.

Everything sheet metal, you're on your own for the rest. There have been a couple of magazine articles that list at least part of the stuff you can't get from them.

The rest of the convertible only pieces will cost you several thousand and lots of looking.

With everything said.....It would be awesome to see a custom/modified four door convertable. If it really is a dream to have such a car, then turn that dream into reality. If you got the money and can fabricate that kind of scenario, go for it!!!

I happen to have a conv. 57 that was once a four door. Its a great looking car most can't tell. At the few car shows i have been in its taken a lot of 1st 2nd's. I have the pictures right out there for all to see the transformation. This started out my dads car and he loved it. Now that he's gone i keep working on it. New motor, trans, disk brakes & more. This is a fun car i drive it. Its not on a trailer the top is down more then up. Have you ever been to a car show and seen one of them conv's without a wrinkel in the top. Them are the people that i feel sorry for they never put the top down. Its all about show and money for them. He!! i let my wife and adult kids take the car when they want. I have also been offered a lot more for this car then a four door would be worth. The plates also say POPS 57 on them in memory of fun man with a fun car.

I don't want a covertible 4 door, I want a 2 door convertible, like the true 57 convertible. Nobody wouldn't see the difference after the transformation.

What has been said is that it will be very expensive to make a true convertible that will fool a restorer. That said if you want a fun ragtop get yourself a pair of doors and quarters and have at it!

Mine is a two door. And it will fool all but the most informed people. The wing windows have the locks on them. Real conv's don't. Also the rearview mirrow is longer on a conv. A friend of my brothers hand made all the metal and did the body work. This was not a kit all the conv. parts come from a basket case. That would be hard to find now. Dad had fifteen thousand into it at the time of his death seven years ago. I have stuck another five grand into over the years. I have been offered way more for it. This car is not for sale. But every year at the back to the fifties car show someone try's real hard to talk me out of it. Again this is one fun car that gets alot of use.

A lot of people take this stuff too seriously. Pops 57, I think your attitude is what it's all about. Drive 'em, enjoy 'em and have fun. Sure there are the serious collectors, but I want to have fun. We drive the car and like Pops 57, the wife and kids take it out too. I hope the car is around for my grand kids and they can drive and tell stories about grampa's 57

They did a 56' 4door into a convertible on American Hot Rod late last year. The video is probably available on the Discovery Channel Website. Dude, this is your car, do what you want, and from the way you sound, this is for you and resale value is not a big concern. The ones I have seen were converted into roadsters (no top), but basically looked like convertables and looked very good. There are no rules in this game, only yours.

F34C57,
Wow! How's summer in Argentina?
Turning a 4 door into a convertable is not an easy task, but can be done. Doing it the right way will be the hard part and in my opinion if it can't be done the right way it won't be worth it. Are you a body man and if not will the person making this conversion have the experience of doing it before? If not, you would probably come out cheaper by arranging one from the states being shipped to you. I don't know if you frequent http://www.motors.ebay.com/ but you can probably find a convertable or 2 to choose from.
good luck & tell your fellow friends about chevy talk,
gk

Actually, this conversion was done on Overhaulin', not American Hot Rod. Just in case someone is looking for the video!

I know it is hard to tell these shows apart sometimes. I've done it myself.

Hi POPS 57. I believe I talked to you at "Back to the Fifties" two years ago. You were parked at the south end of the fair-grounds in the afternoon. You have a very beautiful car! I also remember that you displayed your conversion book wide open, where you had your car.It showed the conversion, I was quite impressed. I also wondered why you told eveyone it was a converted 4-door. I couldn't tell by looking at it from passing by,and you had time to share to tell me about the car. Thanks! I had thought at one time to convert my 55 pontiac convertable to a 55 chevy convertable, but alas I fell in love with the pontiac, and will try to restore it to it's former glory. That's a great thing having these cars....we can do what we want with them! Later DJ

1955belair i have to admit that i am a computer idiot as far as posting pictures. The only comp. that i have is at work and its not set up for pictures. The wife now has a digital cam. but the car is in storage up north in my pole barn. So maybe this spring. DJ 55-56 thanks for complements and look for me again this year. I have already registered and would not miss the back to the fifites. Most people are like you and would never have guessed that the car was converted. Then in the same breath they really like seeing how it was transformed. If anyone sees a matador red 57 conv. with plates that say POPS 57 on them. Stop by and say hi. Dwayne.
