My junkyard find. A 60/40 bench in pretty good condition. Nothing a seat cover couldn't fix in the meantime.

The truck bed after hours of prep work and a few coats of herculiner. Repaired the holes punched through by the springs using flattened out old license plates and a riveter.

That looks good. I think it would look a lot better with a regular grille and headlights instead of the work truck version. It's pretty easy but make sure to get an OEM grille. The aftermarket has goofy emblems due to copy right.

What is different in 88 and 89? The work truck grille didn't switch to composite lights in 90 like the Silverados.

The 89 had its own interior quite like the blazer and the vans.
I will post a pic if I can locate one

Well, finally getting around to posting what the new girl looks like. Bought this from the original owner back in late September. Retired US Air Force fella who bought her new in '95 and shipped her to Germany. Brought it home and got tired of it. He wasn't the most diligent at finding and fixing leaks, so I've spent the last several months just tidying up things.

Here she is.

Thanks. It was pretty well cared for otherwise. He did ride the tailgate over his boat trailer one day and gouged it pretty good. I left that off the pics for now until I pick up the right color touch up tube. Won't be able to pull it out much, so I'm going to cover the scratch and keep it from rusting. Step side tailgates are pretty hard to come by.

Thanks, Jeff. I retired the 35's he had on it as the one tossed a valve stem on the freeway entrance the day I bought it. They were ready to die anyway. I scored some Tahoe rims from someone who bought them for their Suburban but they didn't have TPS sensors. Then I bought new skins about a month ago.

Replaced the headlights, markers and reflectors with new.

Not entirely happy with the 4.3 as it gags a bit every time the A/C cycles. Gets good mileage, though.

I found a 5.7 engine complete for $150 that I'm going to freshen up with a new cam. I pulled the heads last weekend and the cylinders are in great shape. Should pick up about 70hp adding the two cylinders and the cam.

It shined up a little bit with a wash. I need to buff some scratches out. NEVER paint a truck black.

Thanks. I looked around for a real long time before coming across this gem.

I was originally looking for a 9th gen with the 8.1 but I couldn't pass this one up after I saw it.. The price was sweet too. Last owner owned it for 18 years. Doesn't appear that he ever intended to sell it. Had some 30+ pages of service records, no accidents, no rust.. A seriously nice example of these trucks. Equipped like a damn RV too. Heavy duty. They just don't build 'em like this anymore. I've been enjoying it immensely.

Find you a 2001-2002 3500HD donor truck and use it to 8.1-swap your Suburban. They're the only GMT400 trucks that ever came with the 8.1.

Regardless of the engine situation, total steal! Looks like it's in nice shape otherwise.

If those 3 engines are available to you, I'd say LS2.

Scott,

Bump to the top…..What became of the Red beauty? Did it get fixed to your satisfaction? I haven’t logged in to CT in years and ran across some pictures of your wrecked van and tracked it down to this thread. Hope it turned out okay.

Bump to the top…

It’s been a long time since I posted on CT. I probably know many of you from other forums but here are here are a few of mine.

1979 K10, Vortec 8.1L, NV4500, NP205. This one has been a project since I acquired it in 1996. I take this truck all over the Southwest exploring the backcountry

1989 V2500, Vortec 8.1L, NV4500, NP241

2001 Silvy 2500HD, 8.1L, ZF S6-650. I bought this one new and it currently only has 69K miles

1993 C1500, TBI 7.4L, 4L60E. Its been in the family since 1994

1963 Corvan project. My dad bought this in 1982. I plan to return it to bone stock. White with an orange stripe

1968 GMC, 396, TH400, A/C, Factory Tach, wood bed. This was my very first vehicle when I was 15. It was a beatup old POS back in 1987. I still have it but it just sits in the garage under a car cover

You may notice a common theme where I am a Big Block fan!
