I've been suffering with the 1st to 2nd lock up with my '59 Chevy for some time and thought I had it under control when it happened again 3 days ago. That's when I went hunting and found this video. The major difference is closing up the clearance between the levers is accomplished by turning the INNER sleeve....removing the screws is not necessary, only loosen them enough to allow the inner sleeve to turn. That and a small adjustment on the 2nd/3rd shifter link cured my problem. This issue is not addressed anywhere in the 1958 Service Manual OR the '59 Supplement. How to correct the problem video

I've successfully adjusted the sleeve on mine many times, but with one caveat: One on of my columns, the tang on the center "rotator" (the part that is driven directly by the gearshift tube) was so worn down I had to build it up with weld, then regrind to size before making this adjustment.

However, the first part of the alignment video (aligning the 1-rev and the 2-3 levers) is new to me.

Thanks for sharing!

The aligning part was strictly by guess.
Apparently Chevrolet wised up by then and added the alignment holes.
