My truck:

2004 2500HD 6.0L V8 Gas

Over the past few years, my engine has been burning more oil than when it was young. The engine is rated for 5w-30, but would it be beneficial to use a 10w-30 or 15w-40 for my next oil change?

Are you sure it's not leaking?

You may start using 10W30 and see if oil loss improves. It shouldn’t effect gas mileage very much if any.

You may also try using an engine oil designated for high mileage engines that has seal conditioners to rejuvenate aging seals and gaskets to help stop and prevent oil leaks. It comes in the same viscosities and synthetic or other.

My company truck was bought at an auction with 52k miles on it. Now it has 359k miles and has had 15w40 in it the whole time. I have never added any oil between oil changes that are usually about 5000 mile intervals. I live in east texas so cold weather is really not much of a problem.
