Where do I purchase new rear axle bearings for my 64 belair? What parts are needed to complete this job, the bearing with the o-ring, the retainer plate gasket, is there also a seal of some sort or does the o-ring on the bearing control the oil?

You should be able to get the bearing at NAPA or any other auto parts store, since they are rather common item still today. There is a paper gasket that goes between the differential housing and the backing plate, that you might or might not want to replace. It is a rather simple project to do, once you have the bearing pressed onto the axle. $26 with free shipping on eBay... Link

Never argue with an idiot. He'll drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.

Thank you for the reply. What about the o-ring that goes around the bearing? The pictures of the bearings for sale don’t show it. I think the o- ring is the only thing that keeps the gear oil from leaking past the bearing.

ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL replacement 55-64 axle bearings are sealed. ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL replacement 55-64 axle bearings come with the O-ring(s). ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL replacement 55-64 axle bearings come with a lock ring.
Gaskets for the axle bearing retainer are NOT included, they have to be bought separately.

And here is how to remove/replace a 55-64 axle bearing.
By the way, the part number for 58-64 rear axle bearings is the RW-607 series. Depending on bearing manufacturer, some bearings come with a wide groove/wide O-ring, some come with 2 small grooves/small O-rings, some come with one O-ring, some come with 2 O-rings. They are ALLLLLLLLLLLL interchangeable.

Excellent information thank you. I’ll see if my local NAPA has them in stock. If not order on line and play the waiting game again.
