I've read that the disk instead of the Captain's Bars above the starter may also be an indication that the engine in question is a 261...true?

I have yet to get the part number casting from the front of the block or looking under the intake / exhaust manifold.

Hi Ram, that's a new one on me. I understand some early 261 may not have had captain's bars but don't know if the circle is true.

What does the casting number tell you?

Cheers Kiwi

Hi Ram, I see what you mean about that circular mark. Perhaps it may be one of the very first 261 truck engines?

The casting part number will tell all.

I am not too familiar with the earlier heavy trucks but thought they went 235 well before the cars. It could be that they and the first 261's were still dippers?

Casting date is G 8 9 which tells me this is a 1959 engine. It pegged the 30 psi oil gauge but works well with a 60 psi gauge. Also valve cover is held with 4 perimeter screws and breather is dead center in valve cover...also seems to indicate 1959 practice.

Hi Ram, Those features are definitely the later full pressure engines. If its cast in 1959 then it may have the full flow oil filter 1/2" lines and pin. If US Truck.

If not It may be a Canadian Pontiac car 261.

As always the casting number near the engine mount will tell all. Usually either side of the distributor and partly under a mount to make it fun to read.

You can see one in DEVES second picture.

Good luck with it being a 261

Cheers Kiwi
