Has anyone ever attempted to paint the letters in the top grille bar on the 1949-50 Chevy cars to match what the factory part looked like? I am going to try taping the letter on an old grille bar and cut it out so as not to damage the expensive chrome plating on the new bar and then transfer the template to the new bar. Looks like I am in for a lot of work unless someone has a better idea.

I painted the Chevy bowties on some hubcaps years ago. I don't remember what car or truck they were for tho. I just used a tiny brush, a small brush and did it freehand.

CAREFULLY draw around the letters with a crayon, then spray paint or brush paint the recesses; everything has to be masked off if you spray paint. Another way I used many years ago, on some 56 Chevrolet tail light housings, was to use a syringe filled with paint, and carefully "inject" the paint into the recesses. You have to keep the part you're painting flat however, so the paint does't run off to where you don't want it to go. Might be a little hard with the grille on the car (Ha Ha!). Along that line I have used Vaseline spread thinly by applying it with the tip of my finger.

I'll be darned. I just got a new catalog from The Filling Station with an order last week. It shows them for my 48 and 46. Will be ordering soon. I painted the ones on my 48. Looks like crap if you look close. Painted the wrong color too (blue).

That's a great idea. I have bought the gold circle and blue bowtie decals on EBay for my hubcaps but I wasn't aware of the grille bar letters. Very cool. Thanks.

When painting on new chrome, by hand or spray, is there a special primer needed? Also, after the paint has dried, should a clear coat be considered? The grille will be meeting new friends along the way like bugs, stones and other flying objects.

If your going to go ‘first class’ paint over chrome, you need to sand it with at least 320 and cross hatch it completely with red Scotch-Brite pads. Clean it with wax and grease remover and if you really want it to stick...shoot it with a pre-etch primer. Follow that with an epoxy primer and urethane top coat with the color of your choice. I would leave the clear coat off because down the road it’s going to get chipped and touch up is much easier and less trouble with only a color coat to deal with and not color and clear...

If your going the rattle can route, all of the above, except you’ll probably be using lacquer primer and top coat it with enamel I would think.

From the way mine had faded over the years and by reading the engineering manual, a simple enamel was sprayed directly on the chrome...no sanding, no primer. It may have been baked before assembly...but it sure doesn't seem that much else was done.
