I am rebuilding a 1961 abandoned restoration project. I dropped the engine in the frame and am currently hooking up the gear selector mechanism prior to dropping the body back on the frame.
I have to say I don't like it - it's difficult to tell without the engine running, but it's not a nice action, not helped by the fact that I think it needs adjusting, since I have to wiggle the lever backwards & forwards in order to get it to go across the gate, plus it's a bit stiff backwards & forwards also.
Being from the UK, I'm more used to precisely engineered ball & socket gear levers with internal selector rods in the gearbox that give a nice smooth and precise action.
Be that as it may, I was thinking about fitting a Hurst shifter. What does the Hurst do that the stock set-up doesn't? It looks exactly the same to me!
It looks like a fiddly job once the body is back on the frame, so if I'm going to do it, now would be the time!
Is there a consensus about Hurst shifters? Are they worth the effort and expense?
My gearbox is a four speed, with seven bolts on the side cover. I believe that denotes the manufacturer? It just has GM on the casing.

Well, I think I have answered my own questions. I found that the 3rd/4th gear operating lever was loose where it goes into the side plate (the nut was loose), and that the operating link rod was bent. So I had a bit of play in the linkage and, more significantly, the bent rod was exerting quite a bit of sideways pressure on all those plates where the gear lever engages, stiffening up the whole mechanism.
Everything tightened, straightened and lubed & it's lovely now.

I take back my earlier criticism of the 'agricultural' linkage on American gearboxes. Now that I've got it sorted, it actually feels every bit as good as a German precision-engineered mechanism!
If I hadn't pulled that rod off & discovered it was bent, however, I'd never have got to the bottom of the stiffness in the mechanism. No idea how that could have got bent!
