I have a bad lifter so I am going to replace them all while I have it all apart. Truck has 320k on the clock.

ACDelco will run $600+ for all 16 lifters.

I found an Ebay listing for $125 for Melling lifters.

"Lifters are sold by MELLING and are made in the USA by United Auto Workers Union" See Ebay ad:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/CHEV-GMC-7-4L-454 -8-1L-49...

Any reason to pass on these and go another direction?

I don't know why the AC Delcos are so expensive. I would think Melling or Sealed Power are OEM

Check the part number to be sure... the auction claims they fit VIN B & N... our engines are J.

Melling has a catalog online, last I knew.

The weird thing is that address on the box is a GM plant. Melling isn't part of GM. That plant supposedly makes lifters.... I had no idea GM still made stuff like that.

I noticed the same thing. Sent the seller a question regarding that.

I checked the Melling part number: JB-7003 with Summit, RockAuto and Autozone online and all say this is correct part number.

So what trucks are VIN B or N?

VIN 8th digit N is a TBI 7.4, which would not have been roller. I don't know what VIN B would be as that does not seem to exist in the GMT400 line of trucks. In the previous squarebody generation the TBI 7.4 is still VIN N, carbed are VIN W, so I really couldn't tell you what B is. The listing may be an error?

The Vortec 7.4 from 1996-2000 is VIN J as 454CID mentioned.

I see the listing shows the lifters are also for 8.1 engines, which are VIN G in the GMT400 trucks and also in GMT800. I do see some references to VIN B being the LS 5.3 and some 6.0 engines in the GMT800/GMT900 trucks but have no idea if those lifters actually fit LS engines? Have my doubts on that.

There's also the L21, but I can't recall what the letter used is. There may also be a separate code for alternative fuel engines. I'm pretty sure I've seen references to that, but since it doesn't apply to me, I don't recall the details.

Looks like the L21 is B

There is also a D LP4, that I don't know what makes it special, as it's listed as gasoline.

GM has moved the vincard info, to here.
https://gsi-cs.ext.gm.com/dealerworld/vincards/

The only N, I'm seeing is the L19, which is the TBI...didn't some of those get rollers at the changeover from Gen V to Gen VI? I've read some of those engines have the newer block, but maybe that's internet lore.

Yeah hard to say without concrete proof. A lot of people get mixed up and try to say some of the small block TBI trucks got rollers near the end of the TBI era, but I've never seen one. I have seen them with the hold-down bosses in the block tapped and drilled, but that's it. SOME of the car applications got roller. But again this is small block, not big block.

Good to know about the L21 being VIN B, so at least it clears that up. Still seems odd to me the eBay ad for the roller lifters would reference B and N VINs.

It could be that the sellers experience with the 454 has all been the big trucks, where he wouldn't find a J L29.

I bought a set of 16 today. They arrive Monday.

What can I look for on the lifters to determine if they are indeed Melling parts vs some cheap knock off?

I have no idea... I've never done anything with them before. The closest I've come to a cam, has been with OHC engines. I may be doing the job, you're doing now, later on this summer.

How did you figure out that you have a bad lifter?

Truck hasn't been used much in the last year. I moved out of state, left the truck behind, sat for months. Finally picked it up and its been sitting in my garage with about 100 miles in the last 4 months. I fired it up one day and the sound was unmistakable. Very loud clacking. Not cold engine piston slap that goes away after start up.

I headed over to a local mechanic I know and on the way over it went away. Guessing the lifter finally pumped up with oil. Everything seemed fine until it happened again. This time the clacking did not go away. He pulled the valve cover and one of the Rockers was "dead" on one side.

With 320k on the odometer, figured might as well do them all. Labor is $150 if I do 1 or 16. Easily replaced by pulling the intake manifold on the big block. Replacing the original distributor and push rods since they are cheap while its opened up.

Seller updated his listing stating they fit 7.4L with VIN J after I questioned them on their listing. No more B & N vins.

That's not too far off from my truck. I've been driving it daily, but short trips, and not changing my oil like I should because I'm always adding it.... It's always used oil, but now I've got leaks, too. I think you posted in my thread were I was asking about it. Thankfully, mine seems to have gone away for now. Still, when I pull the intake to do the gaskets, I'm strongly considering doing lifters, since I'll be right there.

I'm at 281K miles.

The '96 7.4 I used in my HD project had around 230K if I recall when I swapped it in. It needed lifters...but also appeared to have lived a very, very hard life before I got the truck. (It continued to have a hard life after I stole its engine.)

Lifters arrived yesterday. They look great compared to everything I have seen online for stock photo's for Delphi or Melling JB-7003 lifters. These are most likely not Melling but Delphi based on the shipping address shown in the Ebay ad, assuming its all real.

Here is the number imprinted on the lifter body: 310C16A1 I am assuming its date coding/shift etc info not posted on the internet.

I tried googling to see if I could find anything about the lifters but no luck.

I didn't realize that plant had been under Delphi, but checking online, it was. It's one of the plants that went back to GM... like the Lockport, NY plant that made my radiator.

I'll be interested to hear how it goes, since I'm tentatively planning on doing the same later this summer.
