I have 86 1 ton dually 2 wheel drive. It has sm465 with gear vender overdrive. Would like to replace with nv4500. Has anyone else done this swap? Can I use my stock bell housing and clutch? Was told to get tranny from a dodge because they use speedo cable. Sure could use some info. Thanks

The NV4500 will not bolt to your SM465 bellhousing. If you don't want to swap the bellhousing, you can use this adapter with a Dodge NV4500.

If you don't mind my asking, what is your reason for wanting to replace the SM465 + GV?

The first overdrive was trouble free for over ten years. Replaced it 2 years ago when it failed. I've been through 6 replacements since then. I'm tired of it. Need something I can depend on.

Wow! That's disappointing to hear about GV. These are warrantied units from GV, or...?

Yes there under warranty but what a pain in the censored. I have to pull it out , box it up take it to ups wait a week or so to get replacement and then reinstall . So I'm without my truck for a couple of weeks. Plus 2 qts synthetic fluid and gas. Just got to be a better way.

I'm surprised to hear that the GV can be so troublesome. Until now, I hadn't heard anything bad about them, other than the difficulty of repairing them because of their complexity. I'm used to the Borg-Warner OD, so of course the GV does seem complex to me. It has a lot of the elements of an automatic transmission.

Anyway, now I can fully understand why you want to get rid of it. Thank you for explaining.

Just run the chevy nv4500 with a electric speedo&drac setup from a 90-91 blazer/burban or search around summit/jegs for a generator that reads the electic vss and spins the speedo cable

I'm glad to see that Cable-X now has a competitor. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there is any competition on price.
