Thanks, Ray, but I am embarrassed to say
that this is a rare picture with 4 wheels on the ground. I was hoping that I would have the body work done by now, but I don't. Trying to work with the old panels (say cheap) was an effort in futility, so I bought new quarters and a outer rocker and started over. Some of the work I had already down had/has to be redone. Lesson learned here and good thing I don't have a deadline.

The wheel opening work shown has to be reworked because I did it to the old panels and the new panels aren't the same.

The body mount was trashed. The PO's "repair" was bondo and window screen. Not much to work with. I made a fixture using some dimensions from the other side so I could make (say be cheap again) something usable. Here's the mount build in progress. The completed mount is temporarily in the car to set the inner and outer rockers up. I'll take that out, make any length changes if needed, then paint and weld in.

Between honey-do's and the 49, I still find ways to get distracted.

I built a storage rack for my steel & aluminum supply. It started life as an airport baggage cart.

Then I finally did a speed reduction (pulleys & jack shaft) on my 1934 band saw so it would cut steel.

A few more of the shop stuff:

Some real jack stands. I got tired of wrestling the big wood blocks.

And 2 tool additions, a bead roller and rotary shear.

Since I have the quarter panel off today, I decided I would work at fitting the skirt. I made an oak form so I could shape the wheel opening profile to match the stock left side.

After a couple of adjustments to the form, the overall skirt fit was good, but the lower rear quarter/skirt fit was waaay off. I'll put the skirts back on the shelf until next winter.

Hi Tommy, that's coming along nicely. I heard a rumor that the 49-50 skirt is slightly different from the 51-52 one in shape. Apparently there is only one shape in the aftermarket. Sorry I don't have an early one to compare.

The skirts I have came with the car and had nice fit. They still have what looks like the factory undercoating/sound deadener. I found the new quarters aren't quite exact to factory, so I'll massage the skirts to fit.

I've been working on the inner wheelwell reenforcement & closeout pieces to stiffen up the quarter panels and seal up the wheelwells. I also wanted the rigidity for the skirts. Today, I burned up the afternoon making one of the pieces.

Thanks, guys! Things are moving along, but at a snails pace. I get hung up on the small stuff, and spend too much time fitting pieces. Kat says I'm too anal on stuff people won't see. The last couple days I've been slicing up the inner rocker because I don't like the gaps between the inner, outer rocker and the floor. On the brighter side, I did finish the body mount and it's ready to weld in, when the inner rocker's done.

After a month break to reorganize the shop and other distractions, I finally got back to work on the 49.

The inner rocker started off as a one piece part, but due to problems fitting the lower quarter, I cut it in half, just to make it easier to handle. The inner rocker also had it's share of fit issues.

The door opening and outer rocker are still in progress, but here's what I have at the moment. This will be done today and tomorrow, I'll start tacking in the both quarter panels.

My big problem was just getting the door to fit the body. It's not the original door, don't know what year, but it is for a coupe because it has "27" stamped on it. There are trim holes bondoed over, under the Deluxe trim. I had to elongate the hinge bolt holes on the "A" pillar, open the top of the hinge slots, and grind a relief in the hinge at the curve, so I could get the door/body gaps adjusted. This had to be done before I even thought about tacking the lower quarter and rocker in. It was very frustrating!
