I hope this helps you in the right section of the forum, if not, my apologies!!

Has anyone on here ever flown with car parts? I am flying from Minneapolis to Phoenix, AZ, this April to fix my car and drive it back to Minnesota. Parts I am taking are bearings for the diff, an aluminum intake, all the gaskets involved in both if those jobs, a pair of springs, and some other miscellaneous stuff...

The big questions are: will a cast aluminium piece be damaged by extreme cold? How cold is too cold? Do you think I could get through TSA with an intake in my carry-on bag?

Sure I could ship all the stuff UPS or something, but I am a cheap SOB and and really want to take advantage of the two free checked bags with Southwest!

Any thoughts or comments on the subject are much appreciated. Thanks!

All of it withstands life in Minnesnowta as it is. That’s about as cold as it would get at 37,000 ft over Denver.

Probably get some interesting looks by the TSA folks, but it should be fine. I’d double check the airline web page and TSA to make sure.

Way prior to 9/11, I carried on a clutch assembly for a Pro Stock drag race car. Another time a 3/4" drive Snap-On torque wrench. Told them it was for adjusting my watch. Everyone got a laugh off that.

They will look at you funny. But they should allow it. I'd call ahead and ask. If they don't allow it after you show up with it at the gate, you'll have two choices which aren't good - leave it there, it's no longer yours - or pay for air freight which will be very expensive.

Why not check the large parts and carry on the smaller pieces?

I checked 2 boxes with car parts flying back from Vegas one time and it wasn't an issue.

I brought a tranny crossmember, cam, lifters, rocker arms and carb home from Rochester NY to Vancouver Canada in my checked baggage with no issues.
I'm a cheap bas*ard too. That way I didn't have to pay freight or duty on any of it.

It would be best not to put anything like that in a carry-on bag. Security wouldn't let me though with a railroad tie plate. If you check the parts instead, I don't think you will have any problem.
