I have a backup 302 head and valve train assembly for my car. I know for sure what the casting date code on the head means, but wanted to see if any one else can guess or perhaps knows...since it is becoming somewhat rare/scarce now and has been referred to as ‘the best of the best’ of those GMC 302 heads. I guess this is my ‘pop quiz’ for the night! Lol

Great guess Ram, got the date right but.....not it! Lol. Keep trying! If no one comes up with it, I’ll put it out there when I get back from the airport today.

Hum...1952 was a leap year, but February is the month that gets the 29th day. As you can tell the gears are still grinding.

Forest Service?
Fire Service?
Some of the old forest service trucks had sealed engines so they could ford streams.

One would think that the casting number would dictate what function or differences exists with the head itself. The "N", I would say, has something to do specifically with that particular date.

No sir, but I’ll say this. GM could have put the stamping anywhere I guess, but probably a convenience to put it there. It’s a military head and produced right in the middle of the Korean War, however, that’s not the answer!

RAM, even in a non-leap year, all months except Feb have a 29th day.

So N must designate something that makes that head different from the other 302 heads. So... maybe it's got larger ports?

Another left field answer:
N = Nicson. Would GMC have cast a head specifically for Nicson equipment? Seems improbable.

OK lots of good guesses and thoughts. The meaning of the ‘N’ preceding the cast date of May 29, 1952, is this head has a High NICHOL content...No doubt headed for Korea in one of those many trucks. The 302 came on the scene in’52 and was the big brother to the 270 GMC which was a great engine during it’s life.

Thanks for the interest.
