Looking at a 66 impala. Supposed to be an SS 396 car. I do not want to go look at the car yet due to the distance. The owner provided a door tag number that reads " G.M. Canada DD 616437032578". I know that there are better numbers on the car to help id it but the seller is old school low tech "come look at if you want it" and is no further help. So no other info available without driving 4 hours. Can you guys tell any info from the above number and save me a drive. Is this a SS and 396 or is it impossible to tell with just this info. Thanks in advance.

You're very lucky that the car was a Canadian car. Most Chevrolet Muscle Car information for Canadian built cars and cars sold via a Canadian dealer are available through GM Vintage Vehicle Services.

The report is incredible listing every option the car came with, the original dealer, engine, etc.

Canadian '66 SS didn't have a separate vin code. Only way to tell if real SS is on cowl tag. It will have A51 stamped on bottom. As far as engine there is nothing. Clues to bigblock are 3/8" fuel line runs higher up on frame where it passes upper control arm and is held on with a bolt and clamp there instead of a riveted clip. Also if the original coil spring tags are still intact they will have codes for engine type. 12 bolt rear mandatory with 396/427.
