The autronic eye or guidematic dash unit for 1962, were they available as a factory installed item, or was it dealer only? If it was dealer only, did the dealerships paint the unit on the dash, the dash color, or were they supposed to install the unit just the way that it came out of the box? Anyone have any experience with they, positive or negative?
thanks

I have 3 of the 1961 & 1962 automatic headlite dimmers + two on my shelfs (both of them are extra for my use).

They all work great I love asking viewers of the units when out at loop nights and the few shows I go to each year what is the dash unit is when they see it..(lots of other comments on the operation later).
They were all restored or checked for operation by John Oldenburg of Galena, Illinois.
He is a expert on the units and know for sure the answers to your questions.

I think the units were dealer installed. For 1961 and 1962 units are nearly identical if not the same.
All mine are painted to match my dashes. I have a NOS one that looks like the one in your picture.

The picture is one of John's units. I was wondering if they were dealer installed units, did the dealers paint them to match the dash color or just install them the way that they came out of the box? John paints them to what he believes is the correct color, but I don't care for the "one size fits all", and have painted mine. Just haven't installed it yet.
thanks

I am fairly certain that if you bought one they came in gray. My 61 NOS unit is the same gray color.

SWMBO's grandad's Caddy had one on it back many years ago. I hated driving with it turned on--it was always dimming the lights when I needed brights and putting them on bright when the situation needed dim. Perhaps if I'd known more about them I could have adjusted it to work well, but we just left it switched off. Years later, in Los Angeles thieves stole the Caddy and we never saw it again.

Based on rrausch's comments it looks like the autronic eye is a Fugly looking worthless accessory. Don't know about y'all, I don't have any trouble switching my lights from high to low beams.

That is not how the automatic dimmers work. If adjusted right and in good working condition the automatic dimmers will not switch the lights, back and forth all the time as is noted above.

If you don't want the accessory you can not use it
There are lots of accessories made back in the day that are not very useful today, but there are those who want them on their cars.

I believe you Paul. Had I had Chevytalk at my disposal back then I'd have asked here, and probably would have been able to adjust it and we'd have been very happy using it.

I believe that the guru on these units is John Oldenburg. He is the most knowledgeable person that I have heard of regarding Autronic Eyes.
Like any electronic equipment incorporating light sensing circuitry, careful adjustment is required to get it working correctly.
I have one on my '62 SS Convert. Had it fitted back in 1990 when I finished restoring the car. Works fine.
I would say that modern streetlights are a problem with Autronic Eyes but they are a great conversation starter.
By the way I heard recently that BMW has just discovered that an Autronic Eye would be a useful technology for its modern day cars!

Citroen and Tucker cars also had headlights that rotated with the steering direction, all back in the 40's. Go figure!
John

Fugly is in the eye of the beholder. 58 & 59 units if complete can easily sell for $1500 so not exactly worthless.

To decode them use the following chart:
1st number is what make
2nd and third are the year
last six are serial numbers.

156 000001 Chevrolet
256 000001 Pontiac
356 000001 Oldsmobile
456 000001 Buick
556 000001 Cadillac
857 000001 Lincoln. An "A" will follow the serial number 1964 and up
864 000001-B Mercury
864 000001-C Ford
756 000001 Warrant Replacement.
