Scored a SS shift console this weekend, I have installed a 700r4 trans during my rebuild . I have no shifter for it so I was wondering if anyone has converted a different shifter to work with the console. I don't mind a little fab. work. I have nothing to go by or if its possible , I allways see used shifters at the swap meets and was curious . I don't like the LOKAR shifters for this app. and I have looked at the shift works shifter but kinda piching pennys here until I get my dash done. Thanks for all the Help

I have never done one but I would think just buying a stock shifter and they make the OverDrive indicator for it.

I thought the correct shift pattern was
R 1 3

.. 2 4

The 700R4 wouldn't last to long shifting it like that!

Where do the wires run to operate the dome light ? Do they tie into the rear sail panel lights or come from the dash straight down to under carpet into console .

On a factory SS car the center SS console is a separate wiring harness that connects to the dome light harness in the kick panel area.

The SS console wiring is clipped to the floor in front of the front seat from the Kick panel to the center console between the seats. The harness as I recall plugs into the Hardtop wiring harness that runs up under(after running veritcally from the kick panel area )to the headliner (on the drivers side) back to both rear lights in the sailpanels. The passenger side of the harness crosses in the middle of the headliner.
I have a new American Autowire headliner wiring harness to the lights in the sailpanels -its left over from my 62 SS Hardtop---don't ask why

Mine doesn't have one either, I wonder if there is an extra plug on the loom for one.So it should just be 1 off the door lights to the rear console light and then the glove box light piggy back's off that using the console door switch? I have seen an extension that says it comes off the NSS for the auto. What do I need to get my lights to work kinda looking for a plug and play

I looked at the wiring diagram in the 63 shop manual and it doesn't show anything for the console. On my car, the rear light of the console does light up when a door opens so you may be correct about it being wired to a door switch. However the NSS can't be wired to the door switch because you usually shift with the door closed. I don't know about the front light of the console because mine doesn't work.

George
