First off I want to say I don't know the correct answer so I'm asking ya'll the experts.

My 64 SS had a 283 engine but it has a 350 in it now. I do have the 283 engine.

My question is why do I have the 327 emblems on the front fenders?
I have tried googling the question but nothing has answered my question.
You guy's should know if anybody does!

Hemmings had the answer.
Outside, there were SS emblems on the quarters and wheel covers, but only the 409 got an engine call out above the flag logo.

I have had several people ask me why I had the 327 emblems on my car and never really knew the correct answer. I do now though.

283; no flags
327; flags
409; flags with 409

I think you are reading more into the Hemmings statement than they say. They merely say that only the 409 got the '409' designator. That is correct. For full size Chevy, the 283 got a V with no flags. 327 got V with flags, 409 got V with flags and '409' label.

Just for info, that's the same for '62 and '63. HOWEVER, the V's and flags, and '409' are slightly different in 64.

Ok, so is this a V?

The V with the red/white/blue is a 1964 283 emblem for cars that came with from the factory with a 283.

All Chevy's 1962, 1963 and 1964's had the fender emblems as noted:

62, 63 & 64 Factory 6 cylinder car -No fender emblem
62,63 & 64 Factory 283 motor - V emblems with red/white and blue.
62,63 & 64 Factory 327 motors -V emblem with flags.
1962 409 cars the 409 emblem was on the bottom of the V & flags emblem -for 1963 and 1964 the 409 emblems were on the top of the V & flag emblem.
(the 62/63 flag emblems were the same and 64 327 flag emblems are like the one in the first post)

Also note that all 1962/1963 & 1964's with 283 and 327 factory motors had the same factory drilled holes in the fenders so the factory 283 and 327 emblems were interchangeable using the same holes.

Also 1963 & 1964 Belair and Biscayne model cars had the motor emblems in a different location on the fenders than the Impalas

For 1959s the factory motor emblems were on the "Hood"(script-6 cylinder car, V & 3 color emblem for 283, and V & flags for factory 348 cars)

For 1960's the factory motor emblems were on the "Trunk"(single Chevy emblem - 6 cylinder car, V & 3 color emblem - 283 cars, and V & flags 348 cars)

For 1961 the factory motor emblems were on the "Trunk" (single Chevy emblem -6 cylinder car, V & 3 color emblem 283 car, V and flags -348 cars -for 1961 SS cars the flags and SS were combined on the emblem on the trunk.

Finally "starting in 1955" and continuing in 1956, 1957 and 1958 the identification of factory 6 cylinder and V-8 cars had emblem systems and V's to identify factory 6 cylinder and V-8 motors that came in the cars. (For example factory V-8 cars in 1955 had a V emblem below each taillight)

Paul from what you posted I should be able to take the 327 emblems with flags off and replace them with a V only. They will go in the same holes correct?

I looked at NOS 64 283 and 327 emblems and the studs on the emblems appear to be in the same location.

I was thinking the 63-64 impala 6 cylinder got the 6 emblem with the black. Same emblem on the Nova except red. Could very well be wrong on this….

First off, I wanted to thank everyone for the historical facts and data you take the time to share.

When I bought my ‘64 Sport Coupe it came with 409 emblems mounted above the flags. The car has a 327, which turns out is from a ‘67. After being asked countless times if it had a 409 in it, I decided to just replace the 409 emblems with 327 emblems.

While trying to replace the emblems, I discovered the 409 emblem studs were offset, so the 327 emblems I had wouldn’t work. I ended up leaving the 409 emblems in place.

Since joining this site, I’ve learned how to tell if a car originally came with a 409, and while I doubt mine did, I guess I’ll have to look for the tell-tale signs this spring.
