Hello everyone! This is my first forum that I have ever posted on and I apologize if I’m not posting in correct spot. I have acquired a 41 master deluxe that is to far gone for original restoration so I’m going to try and build a low budget rat rod but keep as much original as possible. I acquired a 327 out of an old late 60’S impala and my question is can I use the original 3 speed trans with this engine. What work and difficulties am I looking at ? Thanks for all and any help!!

Hey Mike, Welcome these cars are easy to work on!They are geared real low open drive, easy to do and is a great improvement. Higher gearing and 5 speed trans Makes car good for modern highway speeds Good luck with your project.

Thanks for quick reply. Just hate to see any old car go to crusher when something can be made out of them. Do you think that original 3 speed will work with the 327?

From what I know Mike I don't think so ? Others on here will know. Closed drive line out to rear will be a problem. Junk yard parts for trans and rear end change, springs are well worth doing! Again Good luck

If you find a way to do this project I would give that old transmission about two trips to the grocery store before it dumps.

Someone in the 49-54 did this with his Fleetline. Can picture the car but not the name. Of course the 41 trans may be weaker than a 49-54.

The 41 transmission will not bolt to a V-8 without an adapter. If you keep the 41 trans and torque tube and use an adapter, the engine will be so far back that the firewall will require a lot of cutting and patching. Lastly, as mentioned by others, the stock 3 speed will not survive very long behind a 327 if you make much use of the engine's power.

If you want V-8 power, your best route would be an open drive conversion. However, there is one way you could keep the torque tube and run a V-8. Use a 48-54 truck 3 speed trans. This will bolt to the torque tube and also to a stock V-8 bellhousing. More to the point, the truck trans is about 3" longer than the stock 41 trans, and this will get the engine out of the firewall.

Have I actually seen an installation like this? Not in a 41, but I took enough measurements to confirm that it would work. You will need to cobble the clutch linkage and fab a new transmission mount. You will also need to use a floor shifter and maybe move the radiator forward. For the amount of work involved, and the fact that you would still be stuck with the stock 4.11 gearing unless you can find a PG torque tube, I still think open drive would be a better choice.

Those who choose an automatic transmission want transportation. Those who choose a manual transmission want to drive.

Thanks for all your information. I’m going to switch drive trailer out, it’s not worth keeping the torque tube and original tranny
