I have a 99 tahoe with the old 99 engine with distributor. I started hearing a clicking noise on and off today. after checking a few times and not hearing the noise while under the hood i came on home. On the way, the noise reappeared and kept up. The engine check light came on as I was almost home. po101 is the code which is the maf code. would the maf cause the clicking type noise?

I don't think the MAF would cause a clicking noise. When I think about clicking noises, I usually think that a lifter is bad, or a cam lobe is worn out. Of course, that's probably a worst case scenario. There are a lot of other clicking noises that could be within the engine compartment. Exhaust leaks can start by sounding like a clicking noise, and it could be just about any accessory. Unfortunately, if it comes and goes, it's hard to diagnose. If it's persistent, you can rule out an accessory by removing the serpentine belt and running the engine for a minute or so. If it's not an accessory, a mechanics stethoscope or just a small hose can be used to isolate the location of the noise.

Thanks for the info. I cleaned the maf and cleared the code. Still have the noise. Just wondered because the code came shortly after the noise became continuous.will try the stethoscope and try to isolate.I'm not a mechanic and don't know about how these codes effect the motor. Thanks again
