I have an issue with my 61 Impala 4 door flat top sedan. I have owned this car for 39 years and the issue I’m having is with the wind noise. It’s bothersome generally at 60 MPH and above. I’ve tried new door seals, filling the door jambs with foam tape, and have even gone as far as to tape the complete door and window seams. The noise persists. I have always this problem, but as I get older.... Will I die with this noise issue never solved? Anyone have an answer?

Are you sure your kick panel vents are closed all the way?

No you are not, you are with CT now.

Jokes aside, welcome peejo50.

I would suspect any antenna or rear mirror for turbulent noise and then try to temporary tape the roof water rail to find the culprit. Volvo had an issue with turbulent noise from an antenna solved by winding a spiral plastic strip around it. Try tapeing one of them at time to find the culprit.

Welcome Svenne

I've tried with and without vents open. I've also removed the side mirrors and taped over the drip rail from the cowl to the roof. My antenna is in the rear. It sounds like it is right at my ear level. As I have already replaced the window and door seals, and then tried taping over them, I'm at a loss.

No one ever accused a 1961 car of being aerodynamic, they were designed to look good. Not sure a wind tunnel existed at GM back then. Just look at the grill and front bumper on these old cars, they had no desire to make them slip through the air.

Man, you gave me a flash back moment. I remember those cars when I was putting aftermarket antenna's on them and had a customer come back with the whistling noise. I didn't believe it until I took it out for a test drive and sure enough, the wrap took care of removing the noise.

Maybe check to see if there is any service bulletins on your car.
On my 68 Chevy II Nova I started hearing a noise only above 60 MPH but then quit when I went over 70 MPH and had tried opening up and closing the kick panel vents, tried different heater/defrost settings and wondered what was causing it and found that GM put out a service bulletin on a noise created by the grill and a support brace. While I have not tried the fix yet, I do wonder if that is my issue.

Hi Guys,
Here in Australia there was a product available at auto parts shops that would be fitted to the grille or some part of the front of the car that would whistle when the car reached a highway speed.
The reasoning behind this was to create a noise that would frighten the Kangaroos and other wildlife that was standing in the middle of the road.
It sounds like a joke I know but I have seen these things in auto parts shops back in the day.

Has anyone tried the app on Amazon that monitors sound and noise levels?

Hello ! I had the same problem on my impala 66 convertible , and I found the solution : may be this can help you. If you have the " body fisher manual " for your car , you can see the adjustement for the door window glass : in my case , it was the adjustment " in - or - out " which solved the problem. You need to remove the door trim assembly and inner panel water to expose the adjustment provisions . Look at " body by fisher " service manual , all is in the book ! Good luck !

I had the same problem once. It was a wistling noise, that I finally found that it was a small screw that was causing the noise. I smeared a very small amount of silly cone on it and it stopped.

my 61 bubbletop also whistles at high speed. I know where it's coming from but unsure how to stop it.

It's the passenger vent window. It closes but not ALL the way. I need the regulator to crank it about another 1/8" to 1/4". The seal is good.

If I push it with my hand closed it stops whistling.

any ideas?

cheers
Oscar

You have a bad vent window control if it won't shut tight against the vertical weatherstrip.

Vent controls have 2 rivets holding a plate on them in place. They controls are famous for pushing the plates off the controls and not working or working like you describe.

The repair is to put screws in place of the rivets. The only problem is you have to remove the door glass and vent window and frame out to get the vent controls off the bottom of the vent window small chromed frame.

Thanks Paul, so simply replacing the vent window regulator wont give the vent window the last bit of rotation i need? I can do that. But going after those rivets sounds like more work than im willing to try for this. Just turn up the radio...

Yes you can replace the regulator. Originals are normally not easy to remove in the car. They are very hard to pull off the shaft on the vent window frame.

with the controls/etc in place you will have to see if you can remove it. It has 3 hex head mounting bolts + one on the vent window shaft.

Thanks again Paul. Will try that. I did replace the drive side regulator myself and that one rotates all the way shut. Youre toght it did take some finagling to get it off

Have you tried wedging some cardboard between the door edge and glass. This should keep it tight. For a temperary fix anyway.
