I want to delete the center strip on the hood of my 48 fleetmaster. I assume I have to weld the two pieces together from the top or outside of the hood. After that should I fill the recess with metal before doing any body fill or fill it all with body fill?
Thanks

30 years ago a friend who is an old school customizer, learning his trade in the ‘50’s, brazed my hood halves together from the outside. I think the flange on the underside would make welding difficult. He then used lead to peak the hood from the cowl to the leading edge of the hood. He still brazes today, but once in a while will use a MIG or TIG welder but prefers brazing. After 30-plus years, not a crack in the work he did. That’s even after the hood opened on me about 20 years ago at 60 mph, going straight up and slamming closed when I stopped. That’s the hood in my avatar taken about 3 years ago in Des Moines. If you can find someone that can use lead, that would be the way to go, but that’s only my opinion.

I would suggest you have it mounted on the car while welding it or at least while tacking it. That will save some issues when trying to fit it again later
