As the topic says, my 10 yr. old French door, bottom freezer GE Profile fridge died. At first I thought it was just a bad fan because I turned off the fridge overnight and back on the next day and the fridge cooled, but the freezer didn't. But the fridge started to get warmer and warmer a short time later. The compressor is running, but there is no frost on the coils.

I'm more than a little mad it only lasted 10 yrs. since it was such an expensive fridge. But from what I understand now, that is about all you can expect to get out of them and other than a clogged defrost drain, I never had any problems with it. So I'm not as opposed to getting another GE as I was when it first broke. The repairman that I was talking to said to get a top freezer unit, but my wife doesn't want one and I honestly like having the water and ice (especially the crushed ice) dispenser in the door. Plus we are planning to move in the near future and may leave them fridge with the house, but I still want to get a good one.

I bought a 7.5 cu. ft. Igloo fridge and freezer and I have 2 bar fridges to get by so I have time to ponder the new one and research it. But I figured everyone on here probably has a fridge and may have some insight that could save me a little time and effort. Anyone out there have a fridge they love and maybe have had it a while with little or no problems? Or any repairmen with some advice?

By the way, the old fridge was big. Not sure of the cu. ft. size, but it is almost 36" wide and 70" tall. We called it Fridgezilla. I did some research before buying it and the only common complaint was the ice maker, but we never had any trouble with ours. Thanks in advance for any tips.

No good advice, but if it doesn't cool,it either has a stuck defrost timer or it's out of freon.Possibly a bad valve in the pump.
We also have a huge bottom freezer made by Kenmore.
It's currently on life support!Got the jug of 134-a connected and slowly feeding it gas to keep it going while we hunt for another.A slow leak in the system somewhere that I can't find.
Wife wants only another bottom freezer!
I want one with no electronic controls!
$1000.00 ought to do it!
Mike.

Hello;
Yep! I got a GE Profile.
When it needed some TLC I could barely find a service co that would even touch the darn thing,
Why you ask? Well, for one you have to damn near dis assemble the thing to get to the problems! Mine had 2 small resistors replaced and that was around $600
We have always had good luck with Whirlpool!!

Thanks for the responses. Keep them coming. The repair guy seemed to be of the opinion that it is just not worth the time and money to fix and he is pretty trustworthy. I mean if he could make more money repairing it, he would probably suggest it if it were worthwhile. It’s not the defrost timer or element, that is what turning it off overnight was checking for. I have been doing some research and Whirlpool seems to be one of the best brands out there right now. I’ll be doing some more research in the coming week and see which direction that or someone on here leads me. Fingers crossed.

Stick with a quality name brand unit

Get the biggest fridge that will fit your hole and avoid counter depth fridges , they hold squat.

Good luck on the hunt happy holidays

I bought a scratch and dent for half price with full warranty. When I slid it in the hole you can not even see the dent.

Mine is in a cabinet as well, so unless the dent is on the first couple of inches on the side or on the front, you wouldn't see it. We went to the local Sears outlet to look for the temporary fridge but weren't impressed with any supposed savings. Thanks again for the responses.

Decided on an LG French door with two bottom freezer drawers. It was the only one I could find that had consistent good reviews. Only one complaint that it is loud, which is a common complaint for a lot of refrigerators. The ice maker is a little small, but it's only the two of us. I hope I made a good choice. Wish me luck. These things ain't cheap.

No ice maker in this household. The ice maker in refrigerators is one of the largest causes of UNINSURED water damage there is.

Must be your insurance company. My nieces ice maker went nuts and spewed water all day while she was at work...ins company covered everything...
