I am trying to replace the cracked windshield in my '60 Impala Sport Coupe. The top stainless is the dilemma. I cannot seem to figure out how to remove it. I was told that after I pulled the headliner back I would see some 5/16 nuts that retain the clips. There are none! There are no holes where any studs could have ever existed. There might be a possibility that the upper stainless comes out with the with the windshield. I do not want to mess with removing the drip rails to remove the stainless that is on top of the windshield upper stainless, unless I am sure.
Someone out there has to know the answer, and I sure could use their help. If you have any ideas, please call or text me.
Thanks,
Chris

Here is my post which included the front trim. http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/showtopic.php?ti... It seems that GM used two different ways to attach the upper stainless trim, one with the long studs and one that used the clips that were installed before the glass seal was installed. The trim pieces were unique to the clip that was used. I will post some other pictures in a little while. Lamar (you will have to scroll down to see the info for the clip)

You only mentioned the top trim, do you have all the other trim off? The attached pictures will show where the trim clips are located. This is where my clips are on my '60 Impala 2drht, can't say for sure that yours will be in the same place but more than likely they will be. It you haven't taken off the rest of the trim let me know. Hope this helps. Lamar

There are indention's in the pinch weld across the top where the seven clips go. After installing the clips, I put a piece of tape and measured where they were for future reference. What ever you use to pry the trim out of the clips this will give you an idea where they are. The first clip from the reference mark is 5” to center.

2nd clip is 15 ½” to center.

3rd and 4th clips, 23 ½” and 30 1/8” respectfully to center.

5th and 6th clips, 36 7/8” and 44 ¾” respectfully to center.

7th clip, 52 3/4”

PLS is right on the money. I bought 2 4dr hardtops for parts and both were different. One had the holes with the nuts on the inside like you describe while the other is the same as the pictures PLS posted.

Not sure if this is a Canada built vs US built difference or not. I know the one 4 dr hardtop and my Bel Air 2dr hardtop both have just the clips. The other 4 dr hardtop that had the nuts on the inside I forgot to look to see if it was Canadian built.

Personally I much rather the clips. I can only see the through design with nuts inside lead to a leak potential over time.

Lamar,
I cannot thank you enough sir! This is just what I needed. The screws in the little brackets on the ends of that top stainless piece, I would have never found on my own either. With those screws removed, the upper stainless will move away (forward) and clear the side upper stainless pieces. Now, with the proper tool to release those clips, that I now can locate, the windshield swap can be done.
Thank you again, and have a very Merry Christmas!

Chris

Not to change the subject but being a Canadian would you know if there was a difference in winshield size in canaidian produced chevys vs American built? The reason I ask is that i'm trying to get the windshield replaced in my 58 brookwood wagon and am having a whale of a time getting someone that knows how how to replace it. I will be on my 2nd glass shop next week. I was told that the first winshield was too big, I bought that one from Auto City Classic, rubber from Steele. sorry to butt in to the conversation but I getting despite.

To my knowledge they should be the same. Never heard of any difference like that.

I know all the trim I have found for around windows appears the same size from Canadian built to American built chevy's.

I also have an American built 64 Pontiac and know the windshield is the same for that as well. (lots of other parts are different due to frame differences though but the overall dimensions are the same)

have you measured the width of yours and had someone else with a 58 to measure theirs? windshield as well. Might be a discrepancy between the glass or at least eliminate body dimensions as an issue
