This pertains to my 2000 GMC Sierra (yeah, I know it's not a Chevy lol) with 5.3 Vortec and 4L60E transmission.

Pulling out of a gas station yesterday, still in 1st gear, I heard a loud BANG. First gear started whining, then it shifted into 2nd and 3rd no problem, no noise. I drove cautiously home, about 5 miles and only at about 40 mph top speed, in stop and go traffic. Every time it had to downshift to 1st it was very whiny. Also didn't seem to reach auto overdrive, but that may have been because of my speed.

After I got home I found I have no reverse. Also could smell burnt trans fluid.

Is my tranny toast or can it be rebuilt?

Probably broke the sun shell, but that's just a guess based on experience of having blown up a few 700R4/4L60/4L60E's.

Time for a rebuild, with a few upgraded parts - sun shell being one of 'em.

Where in TX are you located, and do you have a shop you trust?

+1 on the "sun shell" -- it's probably basically "exploded". You can limp (carefully! Remember, you can't back up) to the trans shop & definitely will need a rebuild. Be sure that they're going to install "the beast" sun shell replacement or, in any event, one that's much stronger than the OEM. Yep, been there. Mc

Richard, I am just east of Dallas. There are a few trans shops in town, I haven't done any research on any of them but they have been around for many years.

I doubt I will fix it right now. The drivetrain from this truck will be installed in my 85 El Camino eventually. I will definitely go through it and the Vortec before the transplant.

So glad to hear it's a fixable problem. Any idea of the cost to rebuild and upgrade the parts in a 4L60E?

If you are near Weatherford, Texas, Phoenix Transmissions can fix you up. I bought one of their 700-R4 transmissions a few years back and it worked out very well...

Prices will vary greatly depending on area and shop, but you can expect to spend anywhere from $1K-1.5K for a "buddy deal" to $2.5K at a dealer with a nationwide warranty, installed. Definitely go for installed vs. carry-out as you don't want any arguments if/when a warranty issue arises.

Wow, $2,500 for a tranny rebuild; I had no idea the 4L60E was that expensive to rebuild.

My 55's cast iron PG went out last year. I had zero confidence in the local shops so I had Jasper's rebuild my unit. I wanted MINE done since it is original to the car, and Jasper's has a separate division that handles rebuild/return units. I paid something like $1400 total, and that included freight both ways, plus the removal/install for $375.

I will check with Jasper's on the 4L60E, since I also want this one done, not exchange, and I can have the same shop do the removal/install.

Thanks for the feedback Richard.

I agree with the recommendation on Phoenix in Weatherford. I have two that they rebuilt.

One being an S10 blazer 4wd with about 180k of East Texas mail route miles on the rebuilt transmission.
