I have converted my 1940 chevy from 6 to 12 volt. I used a kit from vintage auto garage for a foot starter. It started right up so I took it for a spin to put gas and it wouldn't start. It would try to start but then the starter just spun after a few tries it started. I brought it home and it did the same thing. Any suggestions I had put a 12 volt battery that I had in there which is way bigger than the 6 volt.

If the starter spins but doesn't crank the engine, I would suspect a bad starter drive.

I was thinking the same thing. But it was working fine when I had 6 volt. I was going to take it off and have it checked out and maybe rebuild it.

You mentioned a kit for a foot starter. Did it have a switch that feeds your coil? If so I wonder if the linkage is hanging up?
