Can someone tell me if I'm missing something besides the filter and canister? Link below in

You need the canister, filter, and the oil filter bypass valve. Link below has a good photo from Classic Industries (and you can purchase it there if you don't have one.)

Thank you jktucker92, that's probably why my canister spewed a few quarts of oil through the canister?

The bypass valve is there to allow oil to bypass the filter if the filter is plugged. The other reason for the bypass valve is it traps the o-ring that is used to seal the canister to the block. New o-rings are provided with new filters. They can be difficult to remove when replacing the filter, but they must be replaced to prevent leaks. Without the bypass valve, the o-ring wouldn't stay in place and there would probably be a huge leak.

Thanks Tom, this is a great write up on the different styles of landing pads on the pre 68 blocks. After my oil mishap a lot of people were telling me to convert it to the spin on filter style. But my gut instincts were telling me that it wouldn't work all along, and this write up just confirmed it! Great info! Thanks again..

You're welcome! Docpete supplied the info and pictures for that. I put that info into a document and put it on my server.

The old cannisters are a pain when changing the oil. My 427 is a newer block so it has the machined area for the spin-on filter. I take advantage of that with a two quart tall filter!
