Lately when I call a company to find out some updated info about an old time product I have been using for years, I end up knowing more about it than they do.

One of them was POR-15, when I called, they really didn't even know what I was talking about. I was checking on some old time Heavy Silver that I used to use, but evidently it is no longer made.

Just happened again with a roof product I've been using, lol.

Much like talking to a car salesman about the basics of a car you interested in...new or used...they know nothing!

I've spent the last 3 days trying to find a radiator for my 84,GMC truck!
Ended up ordering it on-line.
Bout fed up with auto parts people who don't know and won't accept my order!
I bought it thru Autozone, after being told it doesn't exist.
It,s offered on-line but not on the stores computor.
Believe it or not,the store can't access AutoZones on-line site.Or,they just didn't want to!
Mike.

The simple answer?
NO BODY CARES!!!

People don't care, it's just a job no vested interest in the company , minimum wage, temp workers, no chance of advancement , and everyone want something better.

It's the "special snow flake" syndrome

Why is no one getting into trades ? Butcher? Partsguy? Construction ? Mechanics? Any kind of warehouse or industrial trade?

Because they are all told to get Ann education go to college or university and " become something"
Most of the time these are the people working retail and customers service so they think it's " beneath them"

It sucks I see it alone the time ...... no one cares.....

Customer service seems to be an antiquated idea pursued by the gray generation. People that believe you should deal with integrity, get what you pay for, and that companies should stand behind the products that they make and/or sell.

The reality is that we are dealing with the joys of globalization. You may see Todd or Jason or Tamika behind the counter but in reality you are dealing with Tong or Wang thousands of miles away. Also don't bring in any dirty parts to match up with the new ones. The parts counter girls will not accept having to get their hands dirty or (the worst of all) maybe chipping a nail.

Interesting replies y'all.

I believe a lot of companies, like the ones I've been dealing with, would rather act dumb, rather than just admitting that they no longer make the product or admit that their premium product line is no longer available. Both of the ones I mentioned above both pretty much stated "I don't know what you are talking about".

What??

I could write a whole book on your previous product.

But if it's also a case of putting on a "dumb" mimimum wage customer service person dealing with the public on there, then what a way to run a business!!

had to change the oil in my new mower and needed an oil filter. went to the autozone and it wasn't listed in the book by the filters. went to the counter and a girl asked if she could help. I told her I needed a oil filter for the Kohler 7000 series 24 hp lawn mower motor. she looked and said that they didn't carry any lawn mower parts. an older counter person walked by and asked what I needed. told him and he showed her where the mower parts were in the computer. took him about a minute to get the part number and walk over to shelf and get it.

guess she would have let a customer go to the competition. you can explain in detail what you need and most still don't have a clue on what you need.

customer service is a thing of the past, at least at most places.

I had a Craftsman mower with a Briggs 20hp twin. Sears wanted like 10 or 12 dollars for an oil filter. Seemed a little pricey to me. I went home and did the ole google search and found out that an AC PF53 was a direct replacement for the Briggs filter and only cost $3.99 each at Autozone.

I have been in the parts business for 44 years starting as a driver for a large "old time" jobber store that had everything. I stayed for 2 years and was in hog heaven. A few years ago I was forced by circumstances to take a job as a store manager for Autozone. I'll tell you, automotive knowldege is not a prerequisite for getting hired there. As long as you can wear the outfit they tell you to wear and can come to work on time, you're hired. I am what would be known as an "old time parts guy". I'm the one who could look at an old fuel pump someone needed and know that the part number is stamped into the edge of the mounting flange, or could tell just by looking at it what it was off of. One time one of my 19 year old female "counter persons" was trying to find a fuel pump for a guy who was restoring a 1964 Falcon and she wasn't having any luck. I stood back to see what she would come up with and I started talking with the car owner. After about ten minutes of her not figuring it out (he had the old pump with him) I picked it up and gave her the number off the flange which is the same number still used today. The owner was pretty impressed by the fact that he was in a store where someone knew what they were talking about. That day he spent $1600 dollars on parts for his Falcon and within two weeks had come back in and asked for me and spent another $3000. And you know what happened to me? I got chewed out by my district manager because the guy didn't buy any of the 99 cent foil packs of grease that are on the racks by the cash register. Those 99 cent grease packs are AutoZone's #1 priority because they probably pat like 2 cents apiece for them. I couldn't wait to get out of that organization. Now I manage an automotive performance plumbing company and am as happy as could be. I still get to help people out with their installation problems and dont' have to deal with the multiple layers of micro management that AutoZone forces upon their people.

I may be getting older but I refuse to grow up.
