I have a '99 Silverado 5.3L 4x4, 125K miles and oodles of rust.

When you try to start the engine, it roars to life quickly but shuts off just as suddenly less than a second later. It will do this repeatedly and has not stayed running since the issue appeared ~ 1 month ago.

I've checked fuel pressure which is holding steady around 54 psi.

I have a cheapo ODB2 to bluetooth adaptor and the free Torque app which shows no codes.

My first thought was PassLock. The message center doesn't work on this truck, so I can't see if the security message is on or not. I tried reseating the wires at the ignition and going through the relearning procedure but the issue persists. Also, shouldn't there be a code if this was a PassLock issue?

Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to Chevytalk,

Firing up then immediately shutting off, consistently, sure does sound like Passlock to me. It's unfortunate your info center is not working, preventing you from seeing a security message.

Torque is pretty good for regular codes but I don't think (could be totally wrong here) that it will show BCM codes with is what Passlock would generate. You might need a more capable scanner like what the dealer uses, Tech II and similar.

You could try doing a Passlock relearn to see if you can get around the problem, may work - may work temporarily. In my limited experience with Passlock problems, once they start, you kind of go down the rabbit hole of repair attempts until you finally get sick of it and have a custom tuner remove the functionality from your PCM.

Passlock relearn - be sure battery is fully charged, this takes 30 minutes or so with the key on. If your auto headlights come on while you're doing this you should remember to turn them off each time you turn the key on.

Obviously since your display is out and you can't see the SECURITY message, you'll have to time your steps -

I've been through the relearn process twice so far, but no luck. Like you said its down to timing, but I was pretty careful with it.

I got a hold of a friend's scanner app this weekend which claims to read BCM codes. I saw a bunch of ABS codes and two transmission codes that didn't show up on Torque, but nothing related to the BCM or PassLock.

Any other ideas?

I wonder if you could easily get your message center working to determine whether it's a security error. Is just your message center dead, or the odometer/gear indicator too? If both, then check your IGN 0 fuse, driver's side dashboard fuse panel.

If it's just the message center then it may be a problem internal to the cluster. If you're handy at all with electronics you may be able to pop it apart and find bad solder joints to repair and get that working again.

Beyond that I'm still going to suggest scanning with a more capable tool. GM Tech II or someone else suggested an Autel MD802 but I have no experience with that. From what I can tell so far, there are not any app-based scanners that can read BCM codes.

The message center flashes random messages and test patterns, its done this constantly for about a year and on and off over the past few years before that. Seeing as this truck doesn't see any on-road duty anymore, I haven't been too concerned about it until now.

Any idea what codes a PassLock failure should set?

Yep, that list would be useful if you can find something that will pull those BCM codes (if any.)
