i am currently working on a 71 with factory ac and trying to get it to cool properly. one of the problems i have is that what i think is the fresh air door under the grille by the windshield is broken.
what is the correct name for this door?
where might i find one and what would be the best way to replace it?

The Service Manual calls the "door" an outside air inlet valve. It is vacuum operated and should close to recirculate the air to get maximum cooling.

The usual problems that happens to the "valve" (I call it a "door" is the shaft breaks or the vacuum motor fails. Of course a leakage of vacuum can cause control problems.

The vacuum motor has to be disconnected and is accessible under the hood. To get at the door, the cowl has to be removed. There should be a spring hooked to the door that holds it open, (the vacuum motor closes the door).

I am not sure where to buy the "door".

thanks,jimKshortstep4X4. the door is broken. the shaft broke off. the actuator still works good, especially since i repaired the vacuum hoses.
i finally got the ac pretty cold by running it slightly low on freon, but it sucks in haot air.i may try to just fix the door so that it is sealed if i can not find one.

Depending on how and where the shaft is broken, you may want to consider repairing it with epoxie.

I have one that has been repaired, and it looks like a good way to repair it.

I can text you a picture if you like.

I did find out that LMC used to carry them but their site does not list them.

Manes truck parts sell it.
Best mode I ever did to my 71 was seal it off completely.

Another trick to get as much cooling as possible is put a manual hot water shut off in the heater hose. If the vacuum valve lets a little water through into the cab it will make the cooling less. I got 5* more out of mine by doing this.

I put a brass valve in-line on mine and what a difference it knocked down on the heat coming into cab.
