I have a 1957 chevy belair. I have a leak in the power steering pump. I can't seem to find it. The pump isn't leaking and the hoses seem to be ok. Any thoughts?

clean everything. put die for ultraviolet light in it. run it and check it with the light. the leak will show up kind of yellow looking.

The O-ring for the reservoir may be leaking. Link to pump seals.

Another possibility is the vent in the pump cap is plugged. If the PS system is even slightly overfilled it can capillary up the fill spout.

The vent is at the rivet in the center of the cap. Where the dipstick turns under the rivet there is a small notch on the dipstick, make sure that's clear. Soak the cap in solvent and poke a fine wire at the notch, do this for several days, keep poking at it.

There are no visible wet spots around the pump or reservoir at all. There is some fluid underneath on the frame. I see no indication by sight or touch that the hoses are leaking either.

OK, so no wetness at the pump. Not trying to be a wise a$$, but why do you think the pump is leaking?

Where on the frame is it wet with ATF?

Thinking about it, let's back up a bit. Do you have an original pump on the back of the generator? I bet not, I bet you have a later style engine mounted pump. A later pump sits right above the crossmember, which is where I suspect the ATF is.

Yes this is the original style pump that connects to the back of the generator. I know it is or has been leaking. I had a bad brake booster so I had the Chevrolet dealer install a new one. The new booster was deeper than the original one so they rolled the pump toward the fender to clear the booster which put the fill tube directly under the booster line so you had to disconnect the generator to roll the pump over about and 1" or so to check the fluid. Anyway when I drove the car home the power steering was really whining when I mad any turns. I checked the fluid it was low. I refilled it, drove it again and checked fluid. It was low again. I had placed a pan under car to catch any fluids. There was fluid on the pan. Dealer says they didn't disconnect the pump.

Very strange.

Can you post a pic of the gen/pump and how it's situated? Is the fill spout pointing mostly up, or is it sideways?
