The dash on a 57 has a large hole on the curve under the center of the ashtray but this hole doesn't seem to have any obvious purpose. Why is it there?

Hi David,
That is a nice clean dash you got there. That hole is for mounting a vacuum ashtray which is a dealer installed option.

A little more information in case anybody is interested. The vacuum ashtray was offered by most GM dealers for $12.75 in 1957. In today’s dollars that would be about $109 when adjusted for inflation. Asking smokers to pay the equivalent of a hundred bucks for a device when you could just throw the cigarette butts out the window for free was a downfall for this accessory. Environmental concerns were not as trendy then as they are today. The system basically worked with a jar that was installed under the dash that was hooked up to the engine’s vacuum system. A push of a button and the ash or cigarette butt was sucked into the jar by the engine’s vacuum pull. Three versions of the Flame Out vacuum ashtray existed over the four years they were offered. The first consisted of a glass jar that held the ash and butts. The next two iterations were manufactured with metal containers. The glass jars were easily broken and few exist today. A few of these vacuum ashtrays have popped up on eBay and other sites over the years with a price range of $800 to $1,000 depending on the condition.

If its purpose was to mount an accessory, why would they not have made it with the holes there for the tissue dispenser as well? Why did these vacuum units not appear in the accessories brochure for '57 and are not in the accessory installation manual either?

The smokeless ashtray is shown in my accessory pamphlet. Note that holes for the overdrive cable at the left are pre-drilled too. Although holes are not pre-drilled for tissue box, the hole locations are pre-dimpled on mine.

Still have my interest. Were there 2 different versions of the accessory manual? Do you have a page #? Thanks.

There was a long list of accessories available for the 57. It must not be illustrated in the accessory booklet.

Please don't misunderstand what I'm saying. I don't dispute the existence of the device. I have seen the real thing and the GM box for it. I still question why it was never shown in the accessory manual or the installation book. It is not on your list above either. (The vacuum tank on that list was a reserve tank for the windshield washers.)

I have no idea why many of these add-ons were not shown in the accessory manual or the installation book. My guess is they chose the most popular ones. If they printed up all of them then they would have a book instead of a marketing pamphlet.

I'm interested in getting a copy of that installation sheet in the picture of this accessory. Would that be possible?

I've been told that the 58 manual shows it, and it even has a page for the 57, so that makes me think that the option came out later in the year.

I'm unsuccessful in finding the instruction sheet.
However you might try contacting the guy who has one for sale on eBay. Current bid is $1550

If you click on the link to ebay that Blue posted, the auction has ended but there are photos of the instruction sheet that are legible, and you could save them and print them out. Interesting I see the date of the instruction sheet is December 1956.

Yep, that worked (thank you...both!). Now I can install this more correctly. It was surprising to see just how much one of these accessories can go for (WOW).

This one is priceless to me though since you don't see them very often.

Thanks again.

Mike
