I am trying to get a rough idea of how much weight is on the front suspension of a full size 1950s-1960s Chevy.

By that I mean how much weight is the steering trying overcome? I am picturing a fully assembled car (engine, trans, etc.), with modern radial tires (because they generally have more contact surface area with the ground), at a dead stop.

Where would I look for this kind of information?

Here's some data on a '59:

The first page is blank, scroll down to the 'weights'.

It sounds like you are seeking the 'sprung' weight of the front end. You may need to do some estimating to get there.

I have a book, "Chevrolet 55-56 Restoration Guide" that has factory weights for all models for 55-56, including front/rear distribution.

They list "shipping weight", "curb weight", and "loaded weight". Shipping weight is empty weight with all lubricants, but no water or fuel. Curb weight is the same with 33 pounds of coolant and 97 pounds of fuel. Loaded weight is 150 pounds for each passenger.

Example 55 Bel Air 2 door sedan 6 cylinder manual trans

Shipping weight 3155 front 1705 rear 1450

Curb weight 3285 front 1740 rear 1545

Loaded weight 4185 front 2065 rear 2120 (6 passengers)

V8 engine is 30 pounds less all off the the front.

Due to the construction of the book, it would be difficult to copy or scan, but I could give you numbers for a few more models if you want them.

These published numbers seem a little light 200-300 pounds) compared to the real world.

A 1957 car has approx. 1800 pounds on the front wheels.
A 1959 can be another 100 pounds depending on engine and transmission. A cast iron Power Glide or/and a 348 can add another 100 pounds +.

I thought my 56 Nomad drag race car was heavy. this is a fully original car except no radio or heater. full original interior. even iron heads. 30 lb. flywheel, 40 lb bellhousing.
and it weighs 3550 with me in the seat. maybe I am blessed and didnt know it!
my computer program says 51% weight on front axle.
