Just put a 58 235 in my 46 Stylemaster
..and dripping oil from rear, 1 every 7 seconds
Is it possible/do-able to replace seal in-place?
and...any step-by-steps?
...has to be on here, but by search didnt work...

Yes, you can do the job with the engine in place. A 58 engine should be already machined to accept a neoprene (instead of rope) seal, which is much easier to install. The hardest part of the job is getting the top half of the old seal out if it is the rope type. I believe the procedure is covered in the factory shop manual, which you should get a copy of if you are going to be doing any work on the engine. The 58 engine has quite a lot of differences when compared with your original 216.
To be sure if the crankshaft seal is leaking, look for a lot of oil on the front face of the flywheel. If you don't see much oil there, look for a leak anywhere else around the rear of the engine before you take off the pan. For example, the valve cover or side cover can leak back there and the oil will run down the bellhousing. There is also a plug at the rear of the camshaft bore which can leak. This usually happens only if some ham-fisted PO screwed up while removing or installing the camshaft gear with the cam still in the engine and knocked the plug loose. It looks like a shallow freeze plug and you need to remove the flywheel and bellhousing just to be able to see it. If you are lucky, this won't be the cause of your problem.

Well...motor/bell/trans already in...
so you think i should pull clutch out 1st to check fly wheel ?

Pulling the clutch isn't necessary. All you need to see is the FRONT side of the flywheel, so just remove the bellhousing bottom cover.

I have a '71 Dodge van that I bought new with a small block Mopar V-8 that originally had a rope seal. I have replaced that rope seal with the engine still in the van a couple of times. It's easily doable and, personally, I have found rope seals to work better than neoprene. The crux is perfect trimming of the mating surfaces of the rope seal ends.
Some old school items like rope main seals and cork valve cover and intake manifold end gaskets outperform the "modern" stuff for us old guys.

If it is the sump (oil pan) you can drop the pan and replace the gaskets CORRECTLY.
