My 1976 K10 will not go into 4 Hi anymore. Does anyone have some suggestions on what to check first?

It shifts to the other positions just fine but it will not budge when trying to shift to 4 High.

It does not get driven much and was sitting for many years before I got it but it has always shifted into 4 Hi for me until now.

It is all factory original drivetrain, etc.

Thanks in advance for any help.

When you pull the lever is there movement with resistance or it just stops dead?
I would have a look at the linkage under the truck. I lubricate mine every year.
If that does not help pop the linkage off and try putting it into 4hi at the transfer case.
Best of luck. Nice truck

I'm not sure that I inderstand you because in my 76, you had to go thru 4H in order to get to N and 4L.

Sooooo, you you mean that it goes in to 4H and then when you let out the clutch the truck won't move

Not on the '76

The order from front to back goes:
L(loc), L, N, H, H(loc)

I can shift into all except H(loc)

No clutch by the way. Automatic transmission.

Sounds like the shifter is worn out if the other ranges work
That tcase uses a shifter and 2 rods
1 rod controls high-n-low and the other controls lock and unlock

Google np203 twin stick if you want a upgrade

Remove the floor boot and spray heavily with some good rust penetrate and let it soak for a while. Might be just rusted from inactivity.

This is the best stuff...

I have an NP203 in my '75 GMC, so I have read through the documentation a couple of times.

There is a set of directions in my repair manual for aligning the NP203 shifter, and apparently that is critical for getting it to engage all the positions correctly. I've been lucky, since mine seems to work fine; however, based on the repair manual it doesn't look like the alignment procedure is all that difficult.
