I have been thinking about doing a torque converter change. The plan is to unbolt the the transmission from the motor and slide it back far enough to switch out the converter. The question is what is involved with the two piece drive shaft? Do I have to drop the carrier bearing or is there a way to remove the front shaft only? I hate crawling around on the floor. I am also planning on doing a rear gear change. I have a friend that owns an automotive shop that I plan on having him do the gears. Depending on what is involved with the transmission and drive shaft I might just pay him to do it all at the same time. I normally don't pay to have things done that I can do but I really don't like the garage floor especially when it's 110* outside.

Does your trans output shaft have a slip yoke rather than a bolted yoke or flange? If yes, you will have to unbolt the rear U-joint and the center bearing and then pull the shaft out from the rear. If you are willing to pull an automatic transmission, then the center bearing is no big deal at all.

Those who choose an automatic transmission want transportation. Those who choose a manual transmission want to drive.

I'm not sure if the transmission has a slip yoke or not. The few times I have crawled under my truck my goal was to get in and out as fast as possible so I guess I never really paid attention to anything other than what I was doing at the time.

I ain't never done dat...but, I have changed the flex-plate the way you want to do.

When I did it, the shaft had to come out and I only pulled it back about 4".

Taking the 2 piece shaft out is easy. Choke the wheels and put it in neutral on the rear end take the universal clips loose and let the drive shaft hang. Then take the carrier two bolts loose and slide it out of the truck.

The truck magically turned into a Chevelle over night.
