Hello folks I need help identifying a rear end I got free from a guy I made a trade with. He says that it came from a Chevelle but wasn't sure. The numbers/Letters I've found on it are as follows:
D 137
GM11
ME G71162
N 1249518 B

I've searched the interweb for a few days now and have found zilch. I dunno maybe my computer skills suck but I figure I'd ask here. Any and all help would be great.

A picture might help. I've used a couple of Chevelle rear ends over the years. I think if it has disc brakes, someone added them with a kit. I don't remember any Chevelle rear end coming with discs. Does it have coil spring or leaf spring brackets?

This is what they usually say when the know exactly where it came from but don't want to admit it.


Did a cursory scan of the interchange and this is what I found of the possible applications of ME. But with disc brakes it appears modified so what's inside may not be original anymore. Sounds like its worth what you paid for it.

The one thing you DON'T have to guess about is the gear ratio, because you can count that directly without doing any disassembly.

Lift one end of the axle off the ground. Make matching marks on the pinion yoke and casting. Turn the drum (or the shaft flange if no drum) exactly TWO revolutions. Count (or have a helper count) how many revolutions the pinion makes and estimate any fractional revolution as closely as you can. That number is the axle ratio.

If you can't turn one drum without the other drum turning also, you probably have posi. In that case, lift both drums off the ground and turn either of them only ONE revolution. Count the yoke revolutions the same as above.
