My 01 5.3 begins making loud ticking sounds shortly after starting. Sounds like a diesel After a minute probably, it clears up and sounds great. It started doing this when I switched to synthetic oil. I've gone back to conventional oil, but the noise still comes.
What could this be?

Just DUNE it

It sounds as if the lifters are taking a while to fill up after sitting. Somehow, the oil feed must have gotten clogged or restricted, but I don't know how or why the synthetic oil could have caused this to happen.

Piston slap, common in cold weather. They all do it. Nothing to worry about. Google it!

BTW I only use dinosaur squeezings in mine

Piston slap is more than likely the culprit, but that is more of a knocking noise. So if it is a higher pitched tapping noise it may be lifters, a lower pitched knocking noise is piston slap. Mine has a knocking noise for about 45 seconds after I start it up in very cold weather.

Some days it's not worth chewing through the restraints.

check your oil pressure, it may be time for a new oil pump.

Yes, it's more of a rattle than a tick. Like I said, sounds like a noisy diesel truck. Oil pressure is good. Will it hurt if I drive off while making all this noise?

Just DUNE it
