I recently replaced the mechanical pump on my Impala. When I first put it on and started it up there was some gas spraying out from one of the lines. I got that tightened up but the engine runs with a very rough idle to the point of stalling. Having never done this before, is it possible I missed something in the process? For what it is worth, the rocker arm on the replacement pump has a slightly different shape even though it has the same universal number (40987). The new one is a CarQuest. Can't tell you what the other one was.

Mike

Before the replacement, starting and idle were fine. However, going up an incline, which is common here, there would almost always be a hesitation. I was going up a good sized incline when it finally gave out on me. It would not turn over at all while I was stuck on the side of the road, which made me first think it was a fuel problem.

If you had a gas leak on the pressure line side (fuel spraying out) you may also have a leak on the suction side. A leak on the suction side will break the vacuum and won’t draw fuel causing fuel starvation.

GOOD CALL,WITH OLDER CARS THE RUBBER FUEL LINES CRACK,SO CHECK EVERYTHING FROM THE TANK TO THE PUMP & THE PUMP TO THE CARB & FILTER,SOME PAPER FILTER'S IN THE CARB ALSO HAD A CHECK VALVE IN IT TO STOP DRAIN BACK.

If you had fuel spraying out, the fuel pump is working. If there were a leak on the suction side, no fuel spray.
If you did nothing else to cause it to run rough, you could have excessive fuel pressure for your carb, overcoming the floats and flooding the engine.
