Okay I've rebuilt 10 chevy engines, no brag just let you know have done this before. I have a 305 engine that will run and idle and move the car perfectly. and then it will make a clanging noise and when I pull the valve covers it will have driven the pushrod thru the lifter. The first time I pulled the heads to make sure nothing was in the cylinder, nothing there. This has happened 3 times now.the first time was #6 exhaust, the second time was #5 intake. I haven't pulled the valve covers yet for the third time. When I got the engine #3 journal had been spun so I put a new crank in it and redid the heads. All valves, pushrods, lifters, springs and cam were in good shape. The question now is what do I do Now???

If the deck and heads have been machined, the pushrods could be too long, especially with a higher lift cam.
